In the heart of the Abruzzo countryside, the small village of Castellana, within the Municipality of Pianella (Pescara province), hosts its most anticipated event of the year in early September: the patronal feast in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto, the Madonna venerated as the village's protector. Always linked to the September 8th anniversary, the festival combines the community's deep religious devotion with the warmth of secular celebrations, in a blend of faith and joy that engages both young and old.

Two days between the sacred and the secular

The program spans two days. The religious aspect marks the most solemn moments: Eucharistic celebrations, the recitation of the Rosary, and above all the Solemn Mass followed by the procession with the statue of the Patron Saint through the village streets. The procession is accompanied by the notes of a brass band, which has featured renowned groups like the Casoli Band over the years.

The secular side transforms Castellana into a small open-air stage: orchestras and concerts enliven the evenings, with popular music shows and tribute bands that attract a large audience. The firework displays are a must-see, illuminating the night sky and representing one of the most evocative and anticipated moments of the entire festival.

An Abruzzese folk tradition

The Castellana festival is a precious piece of the rich calendar of patronal feasts in Abruzzo, a land deeply tied to its religious and folk traditions. The event is organized by the local festival committee, with the collaboration of the Castellana 8 Settembre APS association and the patronage of the Municipality of Pianella. Traditionally, the festival closes the Pianella summer calendar, following events in other local districts.

A community occasion

Beyond the individual events, the Castellana patronal feast is above all a gathering for the entire community: a moment when village families, emigrants returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighboring towns reunite around the same traditions. Between food stalls, music, and devotion, the village rediscovers the pleasure of being together and renewing an ancient bond with its Patron Saint every year.
