A patronal feast in the heart of Sicily

The Feast of Saint Francis of Paola is the most deeply felt religious event in Cefalà Diana, a small municipality in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, nestled at an altitude of over 560 meters at the foot of its famous medieval castle. Every year, on April 2nd, the day the Church dedicates to the memory of the Calabrian saint, the entire village gathers around its patron in a day of faith and tradition.

The drum parade and solemn mass

Celebrations open in the morning with the evocative drum parade, an ancient announcement ritual that winds through the narrow streets of the town, calling the residents to gather and marking the start of the festivities. This is followed by religious rites in the Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, with a solemn mass celebrated in honor of the patron. At the end of the service, one of the community's most cherished customs is renewed: the distribution of Saint Francis biscuits, votive sweets that recall an ancient devotional tradition linked to the saint.

The procession of the statue

The most intense moment of the day is the afternoon procession: the statue of Saint Francis of Paola is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, amidst prayers, songs, and great popular participation. This devotion is rooted in the figure of the saint, born in Paola in 1416 and founder of the Order of Minims, venerated as a protector of seafarers, as well as couples and the entire community against epidemics.

Cefalà Diana, a village to discover

The festival is also an opportunity to visit one of the most characteristic villages in the Palermo area. In Cefalà Diana, you can find the majestic medieval castle with its square tower and Ghibelline battlements, and the famous Arab Baths, a rare example of Arab-era thermal architecture in Sicily. The territory is known for its extra virgin olive oil, local wines, artisanal cheeses, and traditional cured meats, products that accompany the conviviality of these festive days.

Two annual appointments

Saint Francis of Paola is celebrated in Cefalà Diana at two distinct times: the liturgical feast on April 2nd, which is more intimate and tied to the saint's death, and the grand summer festival on the third Sunday of August, the celebratory peak with a novena, solemn procession, shows, a brass band, and fireworks. The spring recurrence retains a more intimate and deeply devotional character.
