About Madonna della Milicia Festival

Every year on September 8th, Altavilla Milicia (Province of Palermo) celebrates its patron saint with one of the most heartfelt religious festivals in Western Sicily. Thousands of pilgrims flock to the Basilica Sanctuary to witness the ascent of the monumental wooden triumphal float—standing about sixteen meters tall and pulled by pairs of oxen—alongside the evocative 'flight of the angels' and the traditional offering of gifts. A tradition rooted in the 17th century that transforms the village into a grand theater of faith, music, and spectacle every September.

A patronal feast in the heart of Western Sicily

The Madonna della Milicia Festival is the patronal feast of Altavilla Milicia, a small town in the Province of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast in Sicily. Every year, around September 8th, the town fills with thousands of faithful and curious visitors who climb up to the Basilica Sanctuary to honor the Virgin, revered as the community's protector. It is one of the oldest and most attended devotional events in the Palermo area, blending religious devotion with popular spectacle.

The legend of the painting saved from the sea

The devotion stems from an ancient legend. According to tradition, an image of the Madonna stolen by pirates was thrown into the sea during a storm and washed up on the beaches of Milicia. Local farmers retrieved it and placed it on a cart pulled by oxen: where the animals stopped, the sanctuary was later built. A historical document also recalls the pirate raid of July 15, 1636, when corsairs looted the territory and desecrated the sacred image. This memory forged the unbreakable bond between the village and its Madonna.

The triumphal float, symbol of the festival

The spectacular heart of the festival is the triumphal float, an imposing wooden structure about sixteen meters high, built each year in the style of the 19th-century 'candelone' floats from Palermo dedicated to Saint Rosalia. The earliest versions date back to the late 17th century: originally, the float was shaped like a vessel, commemorating pirate ships, and only later did it assume its current monumental dimensions (in 1925, it was exceptionally reduced to about twelve meters due to public lighting cables). The float is pulled by pairs of oxen, accompanied by numerous children who, holding ropes, compete for the privilege of pulling it along the illuminated streets of the town.

Traditional rites

The festival is marked by rituals repeated year after year:

  • The Octave: a week of spiritual preparation with evening sermons and rosary processions through the town streets.
  • The blessing of the timber: the wood used to build the float is blessed in the Belvedere area at the end of August, marking the start of the festivities.
  • The offering of gifts: the faithful carry candles, torches, wax replicas of body parts, baby dolls, and silver objects in procession to fulfill their vows to the Virgin.
  • The flight of the angels: two young girls dressed as angels, suspended in the air and attached to a rope, recite praises to Mary in one of the most emotional moments of the day.
  • The ascent of the triumphal float: the climactic moment, accompanied by brass bands, drummers, and flag-wavers.

Faith and spectacle

Alongside the solemn religious celebration, traditionally presided over by the Archbishop of Palermo, the festival offers musical entertainment in the squares, evening shows, fireworks, and the singing of the Akathistos in the sanctuary. Many pilgrims walk, sometimes barefoot, the path from the station to the Basilica as a sign of devotion. It is an event that captures the deepest soul of Altavilla Milicia and the entire Western Sicily.
