The patronal feast of Altavilla Milicia featuring a sixteen-meter-tall triumphal float pulled by oxen
The Madonna della Milicia Festival is the patronal feast of Altavilla Milicia, a small town in the Province of Palermo overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast in Sicily. Every year, around September 8th, the town fills with thousands of faithful and curious visitors who climb up to the Basilica Sanctuary to honor the Virgin, revered as the community's protector. It is one of the oldest and most attended devotional events in the Palermo area, blending religious devotion with popular spectacle.
The devotion stems from an ancient legend. According to tradition, an image of the Madonna stolen by pirates was thrown into the sea during a storm and washed up on the beaches of Milicia. Local farmers retrieved it and placed it on a cart pulled by oxen: where the animals stopped, the sanctuary was later built. A historical document also recalls the pirate raid of July 15, 1636, when corsairs looted the territory and desecrated the sacred image. This memory forged the unbreakable bond between the village and its Madonna.
The spectacular heart of the festival is the triumphal float, an imposing wooden structure about sixteen meters high, built each year in the style of the 19th-century 'candelone' floats from Palermo dedicated to Saint Rosalia. The earliest versions date back to the late 17th century: originally, the float was shaped like a vessel, commemorating pirate ships, and only later did it assume its current monumental dimensions (in 1925, it was exceptionally reduced to about twelve meters due to public lighting cables). The float is pulled by pairs of oxen, accompanied by numerous children who, holding ropes, compete for the privilege of pulling it along the illuminated streets of the town.
The festival is marked by rituals repeated year after year:
Alongside the solemn religious celebration, traditionally presided over by the Archbishop of Palermo, the festival offers musical entertainment in the squares, evening shows, fireworks, and the singing of the Akathistos in the sanctuary. Many pilgrims walk, sometimes barefoot, the path from the station to the Basilica as a sign of devotion. It is an event that captures the deepest soul of Altavilla Milicia and the entire Western Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Milicia Festival, the 402nd, is confirmed for September 8 in Altavilla Milicia, in the Province of Palermo. As every year, the patron saint's day is preceded by the octave, a week of spiritual preparation that begins the festivities in late August. The festival will feature the rites that make it famous throughout Western Sicily: the ascent of the triumphal float pulled by oxen, the flight of the angels, the offering of gifts, and the solemn procession with the sacred image.
At the moment, the detailed 2026 program has not yet been released by the Festival Committee: celebration times, the float's route, and evening shows will be announced in the weeks leading up to the festival. The official page indicates that the program will be published shortly.
