The patronal feast of Acquaviva delle Fonti, blending faith and tradition
The Feast of Saint Eustace is the most heartfelt event of the year for Acquaviva delle Fonti, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Apulia. Every year, around May 20th, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious and civil dimensions, drawing citizens, emigrants returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighboring towns to the center.
According to tradition, Saint Eustace was originally named Placidus and was a Roman general. During a hunt, a stag appeared to him carrying the image of Christ between its antlers: that vision sparked his conversion, his baptism along with his family, and finally his martyrdom under Emperor Hadrian. In Acquaviva delle Fonti, the Cathedral has been dedicated to the saint since the 16th century and is now the spiritual hub of the festival. Saint Eustace is venerated as the patron saint of the city and co-patron of the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti.
The celebrations open with the three-day preparation and continue with the First Solemn Vespers, which introduce the feast day. The highlight is the Solemn Eucharistic Concelebration presided over by the Bishop, followed by the traditional procession of the image of Saint Eustace through the streets of the historic center. The devotional pageant, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and thousands of faithful, is the emotional heart of the festivities and travels through the streets decorated for the occasion.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival features an intense civil program organized by the Patronal Feast Committee. Among the most anticipated events:
As in every great Apulian patronal feast, the streets of the center light up with artistic luminarie (light displays), while stalls and food stands offer traditional sweets and local specialties. The atmosphere is typical of popular devotion in Southern Italy, where the sacred and the profane coexist in one great moment of community. For Acquaviva delle Fonti, the feast of Saint Eustace is much more than an anniversary: it is a sign of the identity of an entire town.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Eustace in Acquaviva delle Fonti took place from Sunday, May 17th to Wednesday, May 20th, with the usual blend of sacred rites and popular events.
The religious program began with the three-day preparation, continued with the First Solemn Vespers, and culminated on Wednesday, May 20th with the Solemn Eucharistic Concelebration, presided over by Bishop H.E. Msgr. Giuseppe Russo. At the end, the traditional procession of the image of Saint Eustace took place along the city route.
On the civil side, organized by the Patronal Feast Committee, there was no shortage of Bassa Musica parades, brass band performances, the fireworks display, and the convivial moment in Piazza dei Martiri, which concluded with the lottery prize draw.
Acquaviva delle Fonti is located about 30 km south of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS 100 Bari-Taranto road. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) line connecting Bari to Matera-Altamura, with a stop in the town.
The heart of the festival is the Cathedral of Saint Eustace and the nearby Piazza dei Martiri, in the historic center. The procession travels through the main city streets.
Religious celebrations and square performances are free and open to everyone.
The period of highest attendance is the evening of May 20th for the procession and fireworks: it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot along the route and in Piazza dei Martiri.
