The devotional Ferragosto celebration for the co-patron saint of Gioia del Colle
In the heart of Ferragosto, the town of Gioia del Colle, in the province of Bari, gathers around the figure of Saint Roch of Montpellier, the town's co-patron saint alongside Saint Philip Neri. For two days, on August 15th and 16th, the streets of the historic center fill with worshippers, lights, and music: it is one of the most attended religious festivals in central Apulia, blending popular devotion with the vibrant spirit of an Apulian summer.
The local devotion to the French saint has its roots in the plague epidemic of 1656. According to local tradition, the contagion was kept away from the city walls thanks to the intervention and apparition of the Saint, and since then, San Rocco has been venerated as a protector against disease and a patron of pilgrims. A chapel was erected in his honor outside the ancient walls, later expanded into the Church of San Rocco, completed in 1870, featuring a three-nave Baroque style.
The calendar of festivities opens in the days leading up to the event with a solemn triduum of preparation and a novena, animated each evening by the various local confraternities. The highlight is the procession on August 16th, the liturgical feast day of the co-patron: the statue of the Saint travels through the center accompanied by civil and religious authorities, while crowds along Corso Cavour await the return of the statue to the church.
Alongside the sacred rites, the festival features a rich civil program. Evening events in the square include band concerts and musical groups, tributes, and repertoires of traditional local music, while luminarie (artistic light displays) illuminate Corso Cavour with colorful lights. There is no shortage of stalls selling dried fruit, sweets, and handicrafts, as well as food stands and the grand fireworks display that concludes the festivities.
The San Rocco Festival is now part of the municipal summer calendar Joha AeStas, promoted by the Municipality of Gioia del Colle: an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Ferragosto in the Bari hinterland, between the Murgia plateau and the Apulian villages, combining the charm of the Swabian castle and the historic center with the town's warm hospitality.
The organizational heart of the festival is the Confraternity of San Rocco, officially recognized in 1861, whose members wear white robes with brown capes and are dedicated to religious, charitable, and assistance activities. With the support of the municipal administration, the Confraternity oversees the rites and events that keep this centuries-old tradition of the local community alive every year.
The San Rocco Festival 2026 will take place in Gioia del Colle on August 15th and 16th, as part of the municipal summer calendar Joha AeStas 2026. The dates are confirmed, while the full program of religious rites and evening performances will be announced by the organizers in the weeks preceding Ferragosto. As every year, the day of August 16th will be dedicated to the procession of the co-patron through the streets of the center.
Gioia del Colle is located along the SS100 Bari-Taranto state road and is served by the railway station on the Bari-Taranto line, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center. By car, it is easily reached from the SS100 exits.
The religious rites are centered at the Church of San Rocco, along Corso Cavour; the procession and civil events take place throughout the historic center and the town squares.
Participation in the rites and events in the square is free. It is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Gioia del Colle and the Confraternity of San Rocco for the updated program and schedules.
