The patronal feast of Turi: faith, the Triumphal Chariot, and dazzling illuminations
The Sant'Oronzo Patronal Feast is the most anticipated summer event in Turi, a town in the Bari Metropolitan City, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, during the last week of August, the town undergoes a transformation: the streets of the historic center light up with artistic illuminations, the sound of brass bands fills the squares, and thousands of faithful and visitors gather to honor the patron saint. The festival blends a deep religious dimension with a rich secular program of shows, concerts, and folk traditions.
Sant'Oronzo, bishop and martyr, is venerated as the first bishop of Lecce, and his devotion is widespread throughout Salento and central Puglia. In Turi, his cult has been deeply rooted for centuries, and the silver bust of the Saint is kept with great veneration. The community reserves some of its most solemn celebrations of the year for him, organized by the Sant'Oronzo Patronal Feast Committee.
The most evocative moment is the Triumphal Chariot, a monumental wooden tower finely decorated by local master craftsmen and pulled by six mules. On the evening of August 25th, an impressive procession accompanies the Saint's bust from the Mother Church to the peripheral Church of Sant'Oronzo alla Grotta; the following evening, the bust returns to town mounted on the Triumphal Chariot, amidst cheering crowds, flowers, balloons, and fireworks, preceded by a historical cavalcade and flag-wavers.
Alongside religious rites, the festival offers a packed calendar of popular events: evening concerts and DJ sets in the square, the historical pageant, the release of a hot-air balloon, entertainment for all ages, performances by traveling brass bands, and the grand fireworks display that concludes the festivities. Artistic illuminations, an authentic heritage of the Puglian tradition, frame every evening.
Experiencing the Sant'Oronzo Feast means immersing yourself in the most authentic soul of Turi and Puglia: local flavors, craftsmanship, music, and an entire community coming together in its squares. An identity-defining event that, between the sacred and the profane, tells the story of a town's pride.
The 2026 Sant'Oronzo Patronal Feast will take place in Turi from August 24th to 28th. The dates are confirmed by the Municipality of Turi, which has approved the Sant'Oronzo Fair on August 24th and the markets associated with the festivities. The festival will follow its usual structure of religious rites and secular events: the procession of the Saint's bust to the Church of Sant'Oronzo alla Grotta, the return on the Triumphal Chariot pulled by six mules, the historical pageant with horsemen and flag-wavers, the illuminations, and the grand closing fireworks display.
The detailed program of the evenings and the musical guests have not yet been announced: they will be released by the Sant'Oronzo Patronal Feast Committee through official channels as the event approaches.
