A re-enactment of Murgia farming traditions in Gioia del Colle
In the village of Montursi, just outside Gioia del Colle (Bari, Puglia), the Threshing Floor Festival brings the sights and sounds of traditional farming back to life every late summer. The 'aia'—the beaten-earth threshing floor where grain was once processed—becomes the beating heart of a community celebrating the agricultural roots that shaped the Murgia plateau landscape.
The charm of the event lies in seeing vintage agricultural machinery fired up for the occasion: restored tractors, old threshers, and ploughs return to work before the public, coinciding with the traditional season for harvesting and ploughing. It is a rare opportunity to observe how threshing was performed before modern mechanization, with demonstrations showcasing the hard work, ingenuity, and wisdom of Murgia farmers.
Alongside the agricultural demonstrations, the festival offers games and entertainment for all ages, including fun mini-bale races that delight both adults and children, making it a perfect family outing. The atmosphere is that of a genuine village festival, where preserving rural memory blends with the simple pleasure of gathering outdoors in the Gioia countryside.
The Threshing Floor Festival is a key feature of the Gioia del Colle summer calendar, which enlivens the town and its surrounding villages with dozens of music, culture, and tradition-themed events. Among these, the Montursi festival stands out as the most identity-focused celebration, paying homage to the farming culture that made the Bari Murgia famous for its grain production.
The 2026 Threshing Floor Festival will take place on August 29th in Montursi, Gioia del Colle, as confirmed by the municipal Joha AeStas 2026 summer program, which runs from June 28th to September 17th with over forty events spanning culture, music, and tradition.
