The festival of emigrants around the castle of Montesardo, in Alessano

The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the most anticipated event in Montesardo, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Alessano, in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia. Perched 184 meters high on the Serra di Montesardo, the village preserves a medieval layout dominated by the ancient castle with its keep, built between the 15th and 16th centuries: it is precisely around this symbol that, every year on the second Sunday of July, the civil and religious festivities in honor of the Saint take place.
The veneration for Saint Anthony in Montesardo is ancient and rooted in a dramatic episode: a terrible plague epidemic that the inhabitants overcame, according to tradition, thanks to the Saint's intercession. Since then, gratitude has remained alive from generation to generation. An ancient custom dictated that parents would donate as much grain or bread to the church as their children weighed, to invoke protection over their health. Two statues of the Saint are venerated in the village, around which popular legends flourish: it is said that both miraculously refused to leave Montesardo, increasing in weight every time an attempt was made to move them elsewhere.
The most intense moment is the procession with the wooden statue carried on shoulders along the streets of the historic center — via Chiesa, piazza Castello, via Muraglie, via Nazionale — accompanied by the band and the prayers of the faithful. Here the festival takes on a very special meaning: the privilege and honor of carrying the statue on their shoulders is reserved for the emigrants, the children of Montesardo who have returned to the village for the occasion. The festival thus becomes a ritual of belonging and a return to one's roots, which every summer mends the bonds of the community scattered across the world.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the joyful face of Salento tradition. The streets and squares light up with artistic luminarie (light displays), while along the route, street vendors set up stalls with typical Salento food and wine products. The day after the procession, the traditional Saint Anthony Fair is held, with market stalls and entertainment. There is no shortage of musical events, live concerts in the square, and, to close the festivities, fireworks that illuminate the sky above the village and its castle.
Visiting Montesardo during the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages of the Capo di Leuca, just a few kilometers from the seaside towns of Alessano and the extreme tip of Puglia. Among alleys, courtyards, and Lecce stone churches, the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua restores the authentic soul of this corner of Puglia, where faith, memory, and conviviality have been intertwined for centuries.
