The patron saint festival in the village of Gagliano del Capo, in the heart of lower Salento
In the deep south of Puglia, where the Salento peninsula narrows towards the tip of Capo di Leuca, the small village of San Dana — a hamlet of just over 180 inhabitants in the municipality of Gagliano del Capo, in the province of Lecce — dedicates one of its most intense summer days to the saint who gave it its name. The San Dana Patronal Feast is an intimate and authentic event, far from the main tourist flows, where the entire community gathers around faith, music, and good food.
The village takes its name from San Dana (or San Danatte), an Albanian-born martyr killed by the Saracens in the surrounding countryside, where a stele still commemorates his sacrifice today. The community venerates him twice a year: on January 16th and, with the larger summer festival, in the first days of August. The Mother Church, built in the 16th century and dedicated to him, houses the saint's statue and 19th-century paintings, including works by local painter Francesco Saverio Mercaldi.
The highlight of the festival is the procession with the statue of San Dana through the village streets, accompanied by a brass band and the participation of the faithful. The narrow streets light up with traditional luminarie (light displays), and the square in front of the Mother Church becomes the stage for concerts and live music, while stalls offer typical Salento products: from gastronomic specialties to the wines of Capo di Leuca.
Those who visit San Dana during the festival also discover a little-known heritage: nearby lies the Basilian crypt of Santa Apollonia, carved by Byzantine monks between the 6th and 11th centuries, one of the most precious monuments in the area. The village, nestled in lower Salento between Montesardo and Gagliano del Capo, is the ideal gateway to explore the finibus terrae, with Santa Maria di Leuca just a few kilometers away.
The San Dana Patronal Feast is the perfect opportunity to experience the most authentic Salento, that of small villages where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Faith, folklore, music, and gastronomy intertwine in an intimate and welcoming atmosphere, typical of Puglian patronal feasts.
The 2026 San Dana Patronal Feast will take place on August 6th in the hamlet of the same name in Gagliano del Capo, in lower Salento. The community will gather around the Mother Church to celebrate the patron saint between the sacred and the popular: solemn mass, procession with the statue, traditional illuminations, and an evening of live music. The full program will be released closer to the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition — including the times for religious rites, the procession, concerts, and square performances — has not yet been published. It will be announced by the festival committee in the weeks preceding August 6th. The usual format includes the procession with the statue of San Dana accompanied by a band, traditional illuminations, and live music in front of the Mother Church.
