Three weeks of devotion, Palio, and music in Piazza Umberto I
The Feast of Maria Santissima delle Grazie is the most cherished event of the year in Mugnano del Cardinale, a town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, Campania. This is not just a single evening or weekend: the celebrations in honor of the Patron Saint span three weeks in July, from the enthronement of the statue to its return to the throne, marking the rhythm of local life with a continuity rarely seen in the Baianese and Vallo di Lauro areas.
The statue of Maria Santissima delle Grazie, attributed to the Neapolitan sculptor Giacomo Colombo, is kept in the building that locals know today primarily as the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena. The church was originally built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries as a temple dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, only later becoming the destination of the great Philomenian pilgrimage. The solemnity of July 2nd was established for the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies thanks to the interest of Queen Maria Cristina of Savoy, who petitioned Pope Gregory XVI to elevate the occasion to a feast day. To this day, the courtyard named after Maria Cristina of Savoy hosts several events in the program.
Alongside the liturgy, the Maria Santissima delle Grazie Festival Committee creates a secular program each year that turns Piazza Umberto I into an open-air stage: Neapolitan and pop music concerts, marching bands, comedy shows, projections of the Madonna's image, food stalls featuring local products, and a collective art exhibition set up in the Maria Cristina of Savoy courtyard and the Senior Citizens' Club. The secular program concludes with the traditional fireworks on Via San Silvestro.
What strikes visitors is the collective nature of the festival: the pallbearers who carry the statue, the young volunteers, the district committees, and families who renew time-honored gestures like the «leccerata» on Via Garibaldi. It is also a homecoming occasion for emigrant residents of Mugnano, who plan their holidays around the Sunday procession. The Municipality of Mugnano del Cardinale and the parish collaborate with the committee to manage traffic and public spaces, while illuminations decorate the town center for weeks.
The days not to be missed are July 2nd for the enthronement, the Sunday of the solemn procession, and July 22nd for the return to the throne. On peak evenings, the influx of visitors from neighboring towns in the Baianese and Agro Nolano areas is significant: it is advisable to arrive early and account for traffic closures in the center. Admission to all religious and secular events is free.
The 2026 calendar organized by the Maria Santissima delle Grazie Festival Committee combined liturgical celebrations, cultural initiatives, and entertainment for nearly a full month. The opening was marked by the vigil «Waiting for the enthronement of the Madonna delle Grazie» on Wednesday, July 1st, followed on Thursday, July 2nd, by the solemn rite of the Enthronement of the statue and Holy Mass.
Starting Thursday, July 9th, the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena hosted the triduum of preparation, with evening services at 7:00 PM. On Saturday, July 11th, awards were presented to students from the «Alessandro Manzoni» Comprehensive Institute involved in the «Mugnano, land of art and faith» project, followed by the inauguration of the collective art exhibition and, at 10:00 PM, a concert by Mixitalia in Piazza Umberto I. Sunday, July 12th, was the Patron Saint's day: Mass at 10:00 AM with Father Giuseppe Autorino, Palio and Torch races at 11:00 AM — won by the Gruppo Orgoglio Mugnanese — and the statue's departure at noon for the procession through the districts.
On Monday, July 13th, the secular program concluded with a concert by Gianni Fiorellino in Piazza Umberto I and a fireworks display by the Cimmino company on Via San Silvestro. On Wednesday, July 22nd, after the evening procession along Viale De Lucia, Mass in the square, and fireworks at the foot of the staircase, the Madonna returned to her throne in the sanctuary; followed by the musical evening «La Piazza Canta Ancora».
By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, Baiano exit; Mugnano del Cardinale is just over a kilometer from the toll booth. There is free parking near the sanctuary, but on peak evenings, it is safer to leave the car in the outskirts and walk to the square.
By train: Circumvesuviana line Naples Porta Nolana-Baiano (about an hour's journey); from Baiano station, about 3 km away, you can reach Mugnano by taxi or the Nola-Avellino bus line in about fifteen minutes.
By bus: Regular connections with Avellino (approx. 20 km) and Naples (approx. 40 km).
The heart of the festival is Piazza Umberto I, in front of the Sanctuary of Santa Filomena. Processions and the fireworks display also involve Viale De Lucia and Via San Silvestro, while the art exhibition is hosted in the Maria Cristina of Savoy courtyard and the Senior Citizens' Club.
All religious and secular events are free of charge. Food stalls offer affordable prices.
For the Sunday procession, it is best to position yourself along Via Garibaldi or in Piazza Umberto I before noon. Local accommodation is limited: visitors from further away will find it easier to stay in Baiano, Avella, or the Nola area.
