The widespread summer festival of the Municipality of Avellino, from the historic center to the suburbs
Avellino Summer is the major summer festival promoted by the Municipality of Avellino, the capital of the Province of Avellino, in Campania. It is not a single event, but a widespread program that transforms squares, historic villas, urban parks, and peripheral neighborhoods into open-air stages for over a month and a half. The 2026 edition, presented by the Councilor for Culture and Events Luca Cipriano, features ninety events spread over thirty-three days, from July 22 to September 6.
The formula chosen by the administration is that of a capillary festival: not a single central stage, but dozens of locations involved, from the main drawing room of Piazza Libertà to Borgo Ferrovia, Rione Mazzini, San Tommaso, Bellizzi, and Picarelli. The stated goal is to restore vitality to a city that tends to empty out in summer, also enhancing lesser-known spaces and the suburbs.
The musical heart of the festival is the Dogana, the historic building overlooking Piazza Amendola, which has become the city's main cultural hub in recent years. In 2026, the program includes fifteen concerts on the roof of the Dogana — the «Sunsets on the Roof of the Dogana» series, largely entrusted to students of the Cimarosa Conservatory and offered at sunset — in addition to six concerts in the courtyard and fourteen musical events spread throughout the streets and squares.
The 2026 program alternates big names from the national scene and local artists: violinist Uto Ughi with «Uto Ughi & Friends», Simona Molinari with the «Kairos Tour», the British band Matt Bianco, pianist Danilo Rea in a duo with Martux for a tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto, trumpeter Nello Salza with his tribute to Ennio Morricone, and Fabrizio Bosso with the music of Piero Piccioni. Folk music is celebrated with performances by Ambrogio Sparagna and Peppe Servillo. Among the Irpinian artists are BigMama, the godmother of the edition, Joseph, and Frada.
Alongside music, Avellino Summer revives a much-loved local tradition: open-air cinema, with screenings in Piazza Duomo and at the Eliseo, including evenings of silent films with live musical accompaniment. Theater finds space both in institutional venues, such as the Teatro Carlo Gesualdo, and in the squares, with productions by local companies and classic plays.
An important section is dedicated to discovering the city's heritage: guided tours of the historic center, the «Underground Avellino» routes through the Lombard tunnels, and the «Avellino for Kids» itineraries allow visitors to see the city through different eyes.
Avellino is not a tourist city in the classic sense of the term: it is a provincial capital nestled between the Partenio and the Picentini mountains, just over half an hour from Naples, which empties toward the coast in summer. Precisely for this reason, Avellino Summer has a special value: it is the moment when the city reclaims its public spaces and offers them to those who stay and those who arrive. For visitors, it is also the best opportunity to use Avellino as a base to explore Irpinia, a land of great wines and villages that experience their peak season of festivals in August.
Almost all events have free admission: only the concerts on the roof of the Dogana require free reservations due to capacity limits. A program designed to be truly accessible to everyone, from families with children to the most demanding audience of classical music and jazz.
The Municipality of Avellino has presented the most extensive summer program of recent years for 2026: ninety events over thirty-three days, from July 22 to September 6, with about three hundred artists involved. The program structure includes fifteen concerts on the roof of the Dogana by reservation, six concerts in the Dogana courtyard, and fourteen musical events spread across squares and streets, in addition to open-air cinema, theater, sports, guided tours, and initiatives in the districts.
The festival is coordinated by the Department of Culture and Events led by Luca Cipriano, who presented the edition as «the beginning of a great rebirth project» for the Irpinian capital, with programming deliberately extended from the historic center to the suburbs: Borgo Ferrovia, Rione Mazzini, San Tommaso, Bellizzi, Picarelli.
The showcase on August 16 in Piazza Libertà had been announced with Fedez, in his first time in Avellino. On July 27, 2026, however, the artist announced the suspension of his summer commitments for health reasons, resulting in the cancellation of the Avellino date; the municipal administration stated that they are already working to find a replacement. The other protagonists of the evening remain confirmed.
The Municipality has also specified that the calendar may be updated with additions and changes until the last moment: it is advisable to check the official channels before each appointment.
The calendar is the one released by the Municipality of Avellino and may be updated with additions and variations.
By car: take the Avellino Est or Avellino Ovest exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway; use the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction if arriving from the south. Parking is available near Piazza Kennedy and Via Tagliamento.
By train: Avellino station, connected by bus to the stations of Benevento and Salerno; for high-speed trains, the reference point is Napoli Centrale, with direct bus connections (about one hour).
By plane: Naples-Capodichino airport, about 50 km away.
Almost all events have free admission. The exception, due to capacity limits, is the fifteen concerts of «Sunsets on the Roof of the Dogana», for which free online reservation is required (via the Eventbrite platform). Some shows at the Teatro Carlo Gesualdo may have their own ticketing system.
