The feast of the friar from Zadar that Bitetto honors every April 27th
In the heart of Puglia, just a few kilometers from Bari, the town of Bitetto experiences its most defining moment every year with the Feast of Blessed Giacomo Illirico. This is not a food festival or a staged tourist event: it is the town's most profound patronal feast, one that gathers Bitetto families and calls back many fellow citizens who have emigrated, all united by their devotion to a Franciscan friar who lived here over five centuries ago.
Giacomo Varingez, known as Giacomo Illirico or Giacomo of Bitetto, was born in Zadar, Dalmatia, around 1400. Arriving in Puglia at a very young age, he joined the Order of Friars Minor and spent over sixty years in the Franciscan convent of Bitetto, founded in 1432, where he humbly performed the simplest tasks: cook, alms-collector, gardener, doorman, and sacristan. A model of humility and charity, he dedicated himself to the sick and the poor, especially during plagues. He died in Bitetto on April 27, 1496, and was beatified by Pope Clement XI in 1700. His body, which remained almost incorrupt, is kept and venerated in the Sanctuary dedicated to him.
The liturgical anniversary falls on April 27th and revolves around the procession of the relic of the Blessed—the finger kept in an urn—which travels from the Sanctuary through the main streets of the town to the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo. It is the most intense and well-attended moment: thousands of faithful accompany the relic on a journey lasting about two hours. On the eve of the feast, the Portrait of the Blessed, kept in the Cathedral, is paraded through the town, while the following day, a suggestive evening candlelight procession escorts the relic back to the Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary of Blessed Giacomo, located along the SP1 road at the gates of Bitetto, was built around the 15th-century Franciscan convent. The complex houses a 17th-century church with a gilded wooden altar, a frescoed cloister, and a large green park that hosts the Stations of the Cross, a Marian grotto, and the Chapel of Ecstasy. A museum dedicated to his devotion and work tells the story of the friar's humble life.
Devotion to Blessed Giacomo transcends the borders of the Province of Bari and Puglia: in New York, the large Bitetto community celebrates its Blessed every year, a sign of a shared identity that links the Apulian town to its diaspora. The Blessed is also the patron saint, along with Bitetto, of Cassano delle Murge.
Preceded by the novena, the 2026 Feast of Blessed Giacomo saw its central days between April 26 and 28. A particularly significant moment was the celebration presided over by Monsignor Milan Sgrablic, Archbishop of Zadar, the Dalmatian city that gave birth to the Blessed: a sign of the centuries-old bond between Bitetto and the friar's homeland. The procession accompanied the relic of the Blessed's finger from the Sanctuary to the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, amidst the moving participation of the faithful.
The celebrations take place between the Sanctuary of Blessed Giacomo (SP1, at the gates of Bitetto) and the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, in the historic center of Bitetto (BA).
Bitetto is located about 15 km from Bari, along the SP1. It can be reached by car via the SS96 Bari-Altamura road; the historic center and the Cathedral are in a restricted traffic zone, so it is advisable to park nearby and continue on foot. There is a Ferrovided by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane railway station (Bari-Matera line) in Bitetto.
All religious celebrations and processions are free to attend.
