The Favara Carnival: allegorical floats, masks, and music in the town center
The Favara Carnival is the signature festive event of the Municipality of Favara, located in the hinterland of the province of Agrigento, in Sicily. After being suspended for years, the festival has been revived through the dedication of local associations and the municipal administration, filling the town's streets with color, masks, and music, and restoring a tradition deeply cherished by the Favara community.
The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats, crafted by local groups and themed each year around popular cartoon characters and figures from the collective imagination. The floats parade accompanied by costumed groups, confetti, and entertainment along the main thoroughfares of the center, including Viale Aldo Moro, Corso Vittorio Veneto, Via Agrigento, and Piazza della Pace, which serves as the hub for the festival's most vibrant moments.
The program spans several days: evening parades, enlivened by music and traveling DJ sets, are complemented by an event dedicated to the youngest attendees, the Children's Carnival, featuring dance schools, body painting, and workshops in Piazza della Pace. The grand finale is reserved for Shrove Tuesday, with a final parade crossing the town and concluding in the square with dancing and festivities.
Recent editions have been dedicated to the memory of Lillo Scibetta and Ciccio Vetro (Marianeddru), figures dear to the city, in a Memorial that blends remembrance with the joy of the festival. The event is the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Favara, AICS Soccorso Sanitario, the AIDO Favara Group, and numerous neighborhood youth associations, with the support of local merchants and citizens.
Beyond the entertainment, the Carnival represents a powerful moment of social cohesion for Favara and serves as a major draw for the entire Agrigento area, enlivening the historic center and boosting the town's social and commercial fabric. It is a popular, free, and inclusive event that brings the authentic spirit of the Sicilian carnival tradition back to the streets.
The 2026 edition, named the II Memorial Ciccio Vetro (Marianeddru) and Lillo Scibetta, took place in Favara on February 14, 15, and 17, 2026, organized by AICS Soccorso Sanitario and the AIDO Favara Group with the patronage of the Municipality.
The protagonists were the two allegorical floats Gargamel (with the cat Azrael) and Super Mario Bros. The first parade, on Saturday, February 14, starting at 7:30 PM, departed from Viale Aldo Moro and proceeded along Corso Vittorio Veneto. On Sunday morning, February 15, Piazza della Pace hosted the Children's Carnival with dance schools and body painting, followed in the evening by a new parade on Corso Vittorio Veneto. The grand finale on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, departed from Via Agrigento, crossing Piazza Itria, Viale Pietro Nenni, and Piazza della Pace.
The parades take place in the center of Favara (AG), along Viale Aldo Moro, Corso Vittorio Veneto, Via Agrigento, and Piazza della Pace.
By car: Favara is accessible via the SS640 and is located just a few kilometers from Agrigento. From the motorway, take the exit for Agrigento and follow signs for Favara. By train: Agrigento Centrale station, connected to Favara by local buses.
Participation in the parades is free and open-air. During the event, traffic diversions and parking restrictions will be in effect on the affected streets.
