The ovens of Introd reignite for the cross-border bread festival
Lo Pan Ner - I pani delle Alpi is the great cross-border festival dedicated to rye bread, which every October reignites communal ovens throughout the Alpine arc. In the Aosta Valley, it involves dozens of municipalities and hundreds of volunteers, with the participation of territories in Lombardy, Piedmont, the Swiss cantons of Grisons and Valais, and Savoie in France. The municipality of Introd (Aosta Province), at the gateway to the Gran Paradiso valleys, is among the participants.
In Introd, the festival involves the oven at Maison Bruil and the one in the hamlet of Norat. The latter, built in 1978 by the municipal administration, is today the only functioning communal oven in the village: a living testament to a tradition that, in the 19th century, counted up to seventeen ovens in the area, when rye was a widespread crop. During the festival, the ovens are lit to bake pan ner, the black bread made with predominantly rye flour.
Introd experiences black bread culture at two distinct times: the Fiha di Pan Nir in the first ten days of August and Lo Pan Ner, the cross-border circuit, in October. This signifies how deeply rooted this product is in the identity of the village and the entire Aosta Valley. The regional event is promoted as part of the valorisation of the region's Franco-Provençal cultural and linguistic heritage.
Introd's participation in Lo Pan Ner - I pani delle Alpi 2026 is expected in October, in line with the tradition of the cross-border festival. The exact dates for Introd in 2026 have not yet been published at the time of writing this sheet. As every year, the festival involves lighting the village ovens — that of Maison Bruil and that of the Norat hamlet — for baking black rye bread, with entertainment and community moments. The Aosta Valley edition typically involves dozens of municipalities, dozens of ovens, and hundreds of volunteers, networked with the Alpine territories of Lombardy, Piedmont, Switzerland, and France.
The programme and dates for the 2026 edition in Introd have not yet been published. The village's participation usually follows this structure: lighting of the ovens at Maison Bruil and the Norat hamlet and baking of black rye bread, with possible entertainment and tastings. Updates will be published on the official website lopanner.com and by the Municipality of Introd.
Introd is located along the road that climbs from Aosta towards Valsavarenche and Rhêmes, at the entrance to the Gran Paradiso National Park. The ovens of Maison Bruil and the hamlet of Norat are reachable by car from the village centre.
