The signature grape variety of the Turin Hills celebrated in the historic center of Chieri
Di Freisa in Freisa is the annual event dedicated to the Freisa di Chieri DOC, the native grape variety that has been the oenological symbol of the Turin Hills for centuries. The festival brings the heart of Chieri, a town in the Province of Turin, Piedmont, to life, turning its historic squares and streets into a journey of taste, culture, and conviviality open to everyone with free admission.
The core of the event is Note e calici di Freisa in Piazza Cavour: a walk-around tasting featuring 24 local wineries ready to showcase their interpretations of Freisa di Chieri DOC and other Turin Hill wines. Alongside local labels, you will find productions from the Canavese, Asti, and Alessandria areas, with the participation of the Regional Wine Shop of the Province of Turin. With glass in hand, visitors can stroll between tasting stalls accompanied by gourmet street food made with products from the Chierese and Carmagnolese Food District.
For those looking to get to know this wine better, the Spazio Freisa at the Cooking Loft on Via Vittorio Emanuele II hosts a packed schedule of masterclasses and guided tastings. Highlights include a blind tasting led by Mauro Carosso of AIS Piemonte, an encounter between Freisa and dealcoholized wines with Prof. Vincenzo Gerbi, and focus sessions dedicated to young producers and wines from the Province of Turin. It is a precious opportunity to understand the versatility of a frequently underestimated grape variety.
Di Freisa in Freisa is more than just wine: the festival offers live music, DJ sets with well-known voices from Radio DEEJAY, street performer acts, traditional Occitan dances, and evening concerts. The program also includes La Freisa in Fiera, featuring shopping along the city streets, art exhibitions, tours of local cultural sites, and free activities designed for families and children.
Organized by the Municipality of Chieri in collaboration with Gusto Sì, the Consortium for the Protection of Freisa di Chieri DOC, and the Italian Red Cross, the festival has grown over time to become one of the most anticipated food and wine events of the Turin spring. It serves as an important showcase for local producers and a way to highlight the deep bond between Chieri, its hills, and its most iconic wine.
The sixteenth edition of Di Freisa in Freisa confirmed the success of the Chieri event: according to the figures released by the organizers, the event recorded approximately 4,000 glasses distributed and over 16,000 tastings over the two days. Between Piazza Cavour and Via Vittorio Emanuele II, tasting stalls, street food, masterclasses, and entertainment rotated throughout the weekend, bringing wine enthusiasts and curious visitors to Chieri to celebrate the signature wine of the Turin Hills.
Chieri is located just a few kilometers from Turin. By car, it can be reached via the Turin ring road (tangenziale) in the direction of Chieri/Asti. By train, the Chieri station is connected to the Turin Metropolitan Railway Service (SFM1 line). The event takes place in the historic center, between Piazza Cavour and Via Vittorio Emanuele II.
Admission to the festival is free. Wine tastings and street food are available for purchase at the winery and vendor stalls.
Saturday from 5:00 PM to midnight; Sunday from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
