About Cuzzetiello Festival

The Cuzzetiello Festival in Domicella celebrates one of the most authentic symbols of popular Campanian cuisine: the cuzzetiello, the crusty end of a loaf of homemade bread, hollowed out and filled with rich, savory sauces. Organized by the Pro Loco Domicella in the green spaces of Villa Giovanni Paolo II, in the Giano Anisio area, the event combines tastings, traditional games, live music, and DJ sets over a late-summer weekend in the Vallo di Lauro, in the province of Avellino.

The festival celebrating the cuzzetiello

The Cuzzetiello Festival is the late-summer gastronomic celebration of Domicella, a small town of just over 1,800 inhabitants in the province of Avellino, Campania. Established in 2023 by the Pro Loco Domicella, the event has quickly become one of the most anticipated dates on the calendar in the Vallo di Lauro, the wooded basin that marks the border between the Irpinia region and the Naples area.

What is a cuzzetiello?

The cuzzetiello is no ordinary sandwich: it is the cuzzetto, the end of a loaf of homemade bread, hollowed out and filled to the brim with sauce. Originally a humble meal—the marenna, the hearty snack that farmers and workers took to work—it has evolved over the years into a true icon of Campanian street food, now sought after in delis and trattorias across Naples.

In Domicella, the cuzzetiello is prepared with local bread and traditional fillings, all based on fresh, genuine local ingredients: a choice that perfectly reflects the identity of this corner of Campania, where Irpinian and Neapolitan culinary traditions meet.

Traditional fillings

  • Meatballs in tomato sauce, the most popular and iconic version;
  • Sausage and friarielli (broccoli rabe), the great Campanian classic;
  • Eggplant and mushrooms;
  • Peppers and tomato;
  • Peppers and fried potatoes;
  • more home-style variations featuring Sunday ragù, minestra maritata (wedding soup), or beans in tomato sauce.

Beyond the table: games, music, and carruoccioli

Since its first edition, the festival has paired tastings with a program of popular entertainment: Giocolandia designed for children, the scopone card tournament for enthusiasts, musical performances, and evening DJ sets. In some years, Sunday has been dedicated to the carruoccioli race, gravity-powered carts handcrafted from wood and rope that race down the town's streets: a traditional game with deep roots in Domicella that draws crowds from across the surrounding area.

Where it takes place

The event's headquarters is Villa Giovanni Paolo II, the equipped green area in the Giano Anisio locality: lawns, trees, and wide-open spaces that host the food stalls, the stage, and the play areas. The open-air format, typical of local village festivals, allows families to dine at a leisurely pace and stay late into the evening for the music.

Domicella and the Vallo di Lauro

Domicella sits at an altitude of about 200 meters in a wooded basin on the edge of the Vallo di Lauro, at the westernmost tip of the province of Avellino. It is a border territory, which is evident in the local dishes, the dialect, and the very choice of the cuzzetiello as a symbolic product. The town, whose patron saints are Saint Nicholas and Saint Philip Neri, has just under 2,000 inhabitants and is easily reached from the Nola and Vesuvius areas, making the festival a convenient destination for those coming from the province of Naples.

Who organizes it

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco Domicella with the support of the Municipality of Domicella. In its early editions, the festival was also part of the "Il Nocciolo e le strade dei forni" (The Hazelnut and the Roads of Ovens) circuit, a project supported by the Campania Region that connects various Campanian municipalities to promote local agri-food products and traditional bakeries. This context explains the spirit of the festival: not just a simple village fair, but a way to tell the story of bread, the land, and the people who work it.

The Pro Loco Domicella has not yet released the official program for the 2026 edition of the Cuzzetiello Festival. It is advisable to follow the Pro Loco channels to find out the days, times, and activities as soon as they are announced.
