About Cuccia Festival

Every December 13th, on Saint Lucy's Day, Pietraperzia celebrates one of the most deeply rooted gastronomic traditions in central Sicily: the Cuccia Festival. In a gesture of devotion, locals abstain from bread and pasta on this day, opting instead for 'cuccìa'—local wheat boiled and seasoned according to village custom. It is a popular tradition that weaves together faith, rural memory, and the identity of the 'Heart of Sicily' within the ancient village in the province of Enna.

The Cuccia Festival in Pietraperzia

In the village of Pietraperzia, located in the province of Enna in the heart of inland Sicily, December 13th—the feast day of Saint Lucy—is marked by an ancient and heartfelt custom: the preparation and tasting of cuccìa. The Municipality of Pietraperzia includes this celebration among the town's annual events, serving as a moment that unites the community around a dish that symbolizes Sicilian devotion.

What is cuccìa?

Cuccìa is a dish made from boiled local wheat. In Pietraperzia, the wheat is traditionally seasoned with olive oil and bay leaves, reflecting the savory version most closely tied to the territory, whereas in the rest of Sicily, a sweet variant enriched with ricotta, cream, or cooked wine is also common. The name itself derives from the local dialect word «cocciu», meaning grain kernel, and refers to the choice to consume the cereal whole, without grinding it.

A tradition of faith and memory

The custom of eating wheat instead of bread or pasta on December 13th is rooted in a legend widespread across the island: during a severe famine, the providential arrival of a ship laden with grain was attributed to the intercession of Saint Lucy. To commemorate that event, Sicily has honored the Saint's day with boiled wheat ever since. In Pietraperzia, this memory merges with the local rural culture, so much so that a local saying links the length of the day to «a cucciu of cuccìa».

The atmosphere of December 13th

Saint Lucy's Day in Pietraperzia maintains an intimate and popular character: cuccìa is prepared in homes and shared in the historic center of the village, among the streets and squares, in an atmosphere of devotion and conviviality that symbolically opens the Christmas season in inland Sicily.

Pietraperzia and the Heart of Sicily

Situated on a hill in the province of Enna, Pietraperzia is a village with a rich historical heritage, guarding traditions that span the liturgical year. The Cuccia Festival represents one of the moments when this identity becomes most vibrant, offering residents and visitors the chance to rediscover a simple flavor deeply connected to the land.
