Christmas in the City of Nativity Scenes and Ceramics
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Lumina is the grand Christmas festival of Caltagirone, a city in the Province of Catania known throughout Sicily as the "City of Nativity Scenes and Ceramics." For over a month, from early December until Epiphany, the Baroque historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the other late-Baroque towns of the Val di Noto—transforms into a trail of lights, nativity scenes, markets, and traditional events, promoted by the Municipality of Caltagirone.
The heart of Lumina is the itinerary of artistic nativity scenes, which winds through numerous exhibition sites scattered among churches, museums, courtyards, and workshops in the center. Along the route, you can admire unique works, the result of the city's centuries-old ceramic tradition:
The various sites on the route can be visited with the Nativity Card, a dedicated pass that grants access to the exhibition locations.
Throughout the historic center, Christmas markets come to life with their stalls of handicrafts and gastronomic specialties: regular features include the Piazza Umberto market, the hobbyist market in the "Luigi Sturzo" Gallery, and the art exhibition-market at the former Fish Market (ex Pescheria). In Piazza Umberto, the characteristic ceramic Christmas tree stands out, composed of dozens of plates hand-decorated by master ceramicists from Caltagirone, a symbol of the city's artisan identity.
Lumina weaves Christmas magic with the religious and popular festivals of Caltagirone:
Walking through the staircases, churches, and illuminated squares of Caltagirone during Lumina means discovering how, in this corner of Sicily, the most anticipated holiday of the year becomes a great story of art, ceramics, and popular tradition.
For Christmas 2026, Caltagirone is preparing for a new edition of Lumina, the Christmas festival spread throughout the Baroque historic center of the city, in the Province of Catania. As per tradition, the itinerary of artistic nativity scenes across numerous exhibition sites, Christmas markets, the ceramic tree, and holiday events—Immaculate Conception, Saint Lucy, Living Nativity, and Epiphany—are expected.
At the moment, the dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced. The complete calendar, site opening hours, information on the Nativity Card, and rates are published by the Municipality of Caltagirone on the official event website as the holidays approach.
Caltagirone is located in the hinterland of the Province of Catania. By car, it can be reached via the SS417 Catania–Gela road; the historic center is partially pedestrianized during the holidays, so it is advisable to use the parking lots near the city gates. By train, the Caltagirone station is connected to the regional line; the nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The nativity scene route is explored on foot, navigating the climbs and staircases of the Baroque center: comfortable shoes are recommended. The Nativity Card is required to visit the exhibition sites. The exact dates, times, and rates for the 2026 edition are published by the Municipality on the official event website.
