About Lumina

For over a month, Caltagirone—the "City of Nativity Scenes and Ceramics" in the heart of the Catania province—dresses up for the holidays with Lumina, the municipality's grand Christmas festival. Featuring some of Italy's largest animated artistic nativity scenes, a monumental trail across sixteen exhibition sites, Christmas markets, festive lights, a signature ceramic tree, and traditional Sicilian celebrations from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to Epiphany, the UNESCO-listed Baroque historic center transforms into a journey of light and devotion to be experienced step by step.

Lumina, the Christmas of Caltagirone

Lumina is the grand Christmas festival of Caltagirone, a city in the Province of Catania known throughout Sicily as the "City of Nativity Scenes and Ceramics." For over a month, from early December until Epiphany, the Baroque historic center—a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the other late-Baroque towns of the Val di Noto—transforms into a trail of lights, nativity scenes, markets, and traditional events, promoted by the Municipality of Caltagirone.

Nativity scenes: a journey through art and devotion

The heart of Lumina is the itinerary of artistic nativity scenes, which winds through numerous exhibition sites scattered among churches, museums, courtyards, and workshops in the center. Along the route, you can admire unique works, the result of the city's centuries-old ceramic tradition:

  • the "E nasciu" Monumental Nativity Scene, on Via San Pietro, described as the largest animated artistic nativity scene in Italy, featuring over three hundred terracotta figures, mountains, flowing streams, and ancient dwellings;
  • the Animated Nativity Scene in terracotta and fabric in Piazza Municipio, with near life-sized figures;
  • the surprising Nativity Scene made of 100,000 LEGO bricks, on the Discesa Sant'Agata;
  • the Bethlehem Cave set in a Mediterranean landscape, the Diorama Museum, the nativity scene inside a vintage Fiat 500, and the animated cotton nativity scene.

The various sites on the route can be visited with the Nativity Card, a dedicated pass that grants access to the exhibition locations.

Markets, lights, and ceramics

Throughout the historic center, Christmas markets come to life with their stalls of handicrafts and gastronomic specialties: regular features include the Piazza Umberto market, the hobbyist market in the "Luigi Sturzo" Gallery, and the art exhibition-market at the former Fish Market (ex Pescheria). In Piazza Umberto, the characteristic ceramic Christmas tree stands out, composed of dozens of plates hand-decorated by master ceramicists from Caltagirone, a symbol of the city's artisan identity.

Traditional celebrations

Lumina weaves Christmas magic with the religious and popular festivals of Caltagirone:

  • the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th, with the traditional procession and civic parade;
  • the Feast of Saint Lucy on December 13th, featuring the typical Sicilian cuccìa;
  • the Living Nativity Scene in the period following Christmas, which re-enacts the Nativity amidst the scenery of the historic center;
  • the Epiphany on January 6th, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Piazza Municipio and the concluding shows.

Walking through the staircases, churches, and illuminated squares of Caltagirone during Lumina means discovering how, in this corner of Sicily, the most anticipated holiday of the year becomes a great story of art, ceramics, and popular tradition.
