The Nativity comes to life in the alleys of the Arab quarter of Liconza

During the Christmas season, the village of Butera, in the province of Caltanissetta, becomes the backdrop for one of the most evocative living nativity scenes in Sicily. The event comes to life in the historic Arab quarter of Liconza, a maze of alleys, stairs, and passageways suspended in time, where wooden lofts, traditional ovens, ancient stone floors, and an unrestored old stable recreate the authentic atmosphere of life from centuries ago.
Liconza preserves the charm of its Arab origins: under Saracen rule, which conquered Butera in 854 AD, the town became a feared stronghold across the island. That legacy is still visible today in the urban layout of the quarter, with its labyrinth of narrow streets and charming passages. It is precisely this setting, of great historical value, that makes the Butera living nativity unique.
Along the route, costumed performers recreate the crafts of the past: the blacksmith, the baker firing bread in a wood-burning oven, the washerwoman, the carpenter, the seamstresses, the greengrocer, and women busy preparing lentils, chickpeas, and handmade pasta. There is no shortage of scenes depicting rural and pastoral life and, of course, the Nativity grotto. A particularly anticipated moment is the departure of the Three Wise Men from the evocative Piazza Castello.
At the entrance to the Liconza quarter, you will find markets set up in characteristic wooden huts, where you can taste typical local products: spinach and broccoli impanata, sfigghiulata with sausage and onion, local wine, ricotta-filled fritters, nucatolo, honey, nougat, and crepes. An opportunity to discover traditional Butera gastronomy in a festive atmosphere.
Organized by the Old Fashion Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Butera, the living nativity is now a deeply rooted appointment for the community, capable of attracting visitors from all over the province of Caltanissetta and beyond. Between faith, tradition, and cultural identity, it is an experience that combines the rediscovery of the historic village with the warmth of the Christmas holidays.
At the moment, the Old Fashion Cultural Association and the Municipality of Butera have not yet announced the official dates and program for the 2026 edition of the living nativity. Based on previous editions, the event usually takes place between the Christmas holidays and Epiphany in the Arab quarter of Liconza. This page will be updated as soon as the organizers publish the official calendar.
