The vampa bonfire in Piazza Vespri and blessed cuccìa, between devotion and rural tradition
The Saint Lucy Festival is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Mirabella Imbaccari, a small town in the Province of Catania, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, around December 13th, the entire village gathers in the central Piazza Vespri to honor the Syracusan saint with an ancient ritual of fire, blessed grain, and popular devotion.
The most anticipated moment is the lighting of the vampa, the great bonfire ignited at vespers, immediately following the evening Holy Mass. The community gathers around the flames in a warm and intimate atmosphere, amidst songs, prayers, and the glow of the fire illuminating the square on early winter evenings.
After the vampa is lit, the parish priest blesses the cuccìa, which is then offered to all those present. This is a humble and ancient dish prepared with wheat (durum wheat) that has been soaked, crushed, washed, and boiled for a long time in salted water until it forms a white, creamy mixture, seasoned with olive oil and cinnamon. In Mirabella, the cuccìa is traditionally prepared on the eve of the festival, following a slow, ritualistic process passed down from generation to generation.
The cuccìa recalls the famous miracle of the grain linked to the cult of Saint Lucy: according to tradition, during a time of famine, a sudden arrival of wheat saved the population from starvation. For this reason, this simple, humble dish carries a strong symbolic value of gratitude and salvation, which remains very much alive in the religious consciousness of the town today.
The festival includes the evocative procession of the statue of Saint Lucy through the streets of the town center, accompanied by the devotion of the faithful, and a local produce fair that enlivens the streets around the square. Religion, traditional gastronomy, and social life merge in an event that remains one of the strongest symbols of Mirabella Imbaccari's identity.
The roots of the Saint Lucy cult in Mirabella date back to the work of Monsignor Matteo Trigona, Bishop of Syracuse in the 18th century, who promoted her veneration. Since then, the festival has been passed down to the present day, preserving its intimate and deeply communal atmosphere.
The 2026 Saint Lucy Festival in Mirabella Imbaccari will take place around December 12-13, 2026. As per tradition, in the evening after Holy Mass, the great vampa bonfire will be lit in Piazza Vespri; this will be followed by the priest's blessing and the free distribution of cuccìa. The procession of the Saint Lucy statue and the local produce fair are also planned. The complete program, including the times of celebrations and events, will be announced closer to the festival.
The festival takes place around December 12th-13th, the day of Saint Lucy. The bonfire is lit in the evening, after Holy Mass.
