About Polenta Festival

Every autumn, the village of Proceno, located at the northernmost tip of the Viterbo province, dedicates two weekends to polenta, the simplest and most iconic dish of the Upper Tuscia peasant tradition. In the municipal hall of Palazzo Guido Ascanio Sforza, local recipes are served, while the village comes alive with live music, markets, and entertainment. The gastronomic experience is complemented by a gravel cycling tour and the 'Anello di Proceno' hike, which take visitors through the badlands and woods bordering Tuscany.

An autumn festival in the northernmost village of Lazio

Proceno is the last village in Lazio before the Tuscan border: a hamlet of a few hundred inhabitants, perched on a tuff spur in the province of Viterbo, overlooking the Val di Paglia and Mount Amiata. Here, as the days grow shorter and the chill sets in, the Polenta Festival brings together residents and visitors around a humble dish that tells the story of Upper Tuscia's culinary heritage better than any other. The event, which began in the late 2010s, has quickly established itself, now spanning two consecutive weekends in November.

Polenta as community heritage

For generations, polenta was the daily meal of peasant families in the Viterbo hinterland: cornmeal, water, patience, and a cauldron over the fire. The festival restores dignity to this memory by offering traditional local variations, prepared according to authentic recipes and served in the municipal hall inside Palazzo Guido Ascanio Sforza. The service is held indoors, a precious comfort during this season, maintaining the convivial atmosphere of village gatherings.

The palace, the museum, and the historic center

The festival is also a perfect opportunity to explore Proceno at a leisurely pace. Palazzo Sforza, a historic residence with frescoed halls, is the heart of the event; nearby, the Museum of Peasant Civilization preserves tools, utensils, and evidence of field labor that help visitors understand the origins of the dish they are tasting. The historic center, with its fortress and stone alleys, can be easily explored on foot in a short time.

Music, markets, and atmosphere

During the festival, the village hosts live music, folk dancing, and markets featuring local products and handicrafts. It is a deliberately simple, village-style entertainment that accompanies lunch and dinner without overshadowing the experience: those who come to Proceno during these days are primarily looking for conviviality, autumn air, and honest, hearty food.

Outdoor sports: the Anello di Proceno

One of the unique features of the event is its pairing with two non-competitive sporting events, both departing from Palazzo Guido Ascanio Sforza at 9:00 AM:

  • Anello di Proceno Gravel Cycling Tour, open to mountain bikes and e-bikes, with two routes of approximately 55 and 97 kilometers;
  • Anello di Proceno Hike, with three routes of approximately 10, 14, and 27 kilometers.

The trails cross the badlands, woods, and white roads between Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany, in one of the least crowded and most evocative areas of northern Tuscia. Both events conclude, naturally, with a plate of polenta.

When to go and what to expect

The event is traditionally held during the last weekends of November, with service starting on Saturday evening and continuing through Sunday lunch. The climate is that of late autumn in the hinterland: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the village's uphill alleys. Proceno is located just minutes from the Fabro exit on the A1 motorway and a short distance from Acquapendente, San Casciano dei Bagni, and Lake Bolsena, making the festival an excellent excuse for a weekend getaway combining thermal baths, historic villages, and seasonal cuisine.

Polenta Festival โ€” edition 2026

The Pro Loco of Proceno has not yet released the calendar for the 2026 edition of the Polenta Festival. The event is traditionally held during the last weekends of November, featuring tastings in the municipal hall of Palazzo Guido Ascanio Sforza, live music, and markets in the historic center, as well as the gravel cycling tour and the Anello di Proceno hike. Dates will be updated as soon as they are announced by the organizers.

2026 Edition: dates expected in autumn

As of the publication of this page, the organizers have not yet announced the dates for the 2026 Polenta Festival in Proceno, Viterbo province. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place during the last two weekends of November, with service on Saturday evening and Sunday lunch in the municipal hall of Palazzo Guido Ascanio Sforza.
