The conference at the Royal Castle and the travelling festival of artist residencies across the villages of the Roero region
Creativamente Roero – Artist Residencies among Villages and Castles is a widespread event that has been transforming the Roero and Monferrato territory into a vast contemporary art laboratory since 2018. Promoted by the Creativamente Roero Association and curated by Patrizia Rossello, the initiative invites Italian and international artists each year to stay in small towns, where they observe the landscape, engage with residents, and create site-specific works destined to remain as a shared community heritage.
The Municipality of Govone, located in the province of Cuneo in the heart of the Piedmontese Roero, is one of the main venues for the festival. The monumental Royal Castle of Govone, a Savoy residence included among the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Royal Residences, hosts the opening study day in its Hall of Honour, while the famous Rose Garden of King Carlo Felice and Maria Cristina provides the backdrop for the unveiling of new works during the travelling festival.
The project follows a consolidated model divided into three stages: initial exploration of the site, creation of the work with community involvement, and the public presentation event. This participatory approach has allowed for the involvement of twenty-eight artists over the years and the dissemination of over thirty permanent installations across the territory, creating a true open-air museum among the hills of the Roero and Monferrato, now a UNESCO World Heritage wine landscape.
Each stop of the travelling festival is accompanied by food and wine tastings, as well as music and dance performances, weaving the artistic experience with the rural and viticultural identity of the territory. In Govone, the presentation of the works is linked to the town's iconic landmarks and involves local entities in a journey that combines contemporary art, landscape, and the culinary culture of the Roero.
Creativamente Roero involves a network of municipalities in the Roero and Monferrato areas, with the support of the Piedmont Region, banking foundations (Fondazione CRC, Fondazione CRT, Fondazione CR Asti), the Cuneo Chamber of Commerce, and private sponsors. The event represents a virtuous example of enhancing small towns through art, capable of attracting visitors and restoring centrality to Piedmontese villages.
On Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Hall of Honour of the Royal Castle of Govone hosted a study day dedicated to the different implementation approaches of the artists. After the institutional greetings from Mayor Giampiero Novara and Adriano Da Re, Luca Malvicino, and Roberto Cerrato, and a musical performance by cellist Massimo Macrì, the resident artists Giuseppe Gavazza, Carlo Gloria, Francesco Meloni, and Saverio Todaro spoke, alongside speakers Pierluigi Vaccaneo, Alessandro Bianchi, Eugenio Fadda, Alessandra Girardi, and Chiara Bertola, coordinated by Patrizia Rossello.
At 12:30 PM, the Castello Reale Award ceremony took place, awarded for 2026 to Licia Mattioli, with the presentation of a photograph by Luca Centola. In the afternoon, at 3:00 PM, the screening of 'Occhi che videro' (1989) by Daniele Segre was presented by the National Cinema Museum.
On Sunday, May 24, the travelling festival crossed four municipalities with the inauguration of the new works: 10:00 AM in San Martino Alfieri (Carlo Gloria), 12:00 PM in Antignano (Francesco Meloni), 3:00 PM in Govone (Giuseppe Gavazza), and subsequently in Castellinaldo d'Alba (Saverio Todaro). In Govone, at the Rose Garden of King Carlo Felice and Maria Cristina, the time-specific installation by Giuseppe Gavazza 'e la presente e viva e il suon di lei – Giardino d'ascolto' was presented, accompanied by the bell concert 'Perché suonano le campane' and a snack offered by the Municipality. Each stop included food and wine tastings as well as music and dance performances.
Govone is located in the Roero area, in the province of Cuneo, on the border with the Asti region. By car, it can be reached via the A33 Asti-Cuneo motorway (Alba exit) or the A21 (Asti exit), continuing towards the Roero. The nearest train station is in Alba, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The conference in the Hall of Honour of the Royal Castle and the travelling festival are free to attend. Booking is usually required for the conference due to the capacity of the hall. It is recommended to check the official website for updated times and participation details for individual stops.
The event is set within the wine landscape of the Roero: we recommend combining your visit with a walk through the vineyards and surrounding villages, and a tasting at local wineries. Do not miss a visit to the Royal Castle and its historic rose garden.
