The ephemeral art of colored sawdust for Corpus Domini in the heart of Capo di Leuca
Every year, for the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the historic center of Castrignano del Capo, a town in the deep Salento region of the Province of Lecce (Puglia), is adorned with colors thanks to an impressive sawdust carpet laid along Via San Giacomo. This is no mere decoration: it is an authentic ephemeral work of art, about 70 meters long and up to 6 meters wide, destined to exist for only a few hoursโjust long enough to welcome the passage of the Eucharistic procession.
The technique is that of traditional Salento flower festivals, adapted for sawdust: the finely shredded wood is hand-dyed and sun-dried, then arranged on the asphalt following sketches prepared in advance. During the night between Saturday and Sunday, dozens of families, volunteers, confraternities, and local associations pour into the street and work until dawn to compose, panel by panel, a figurative path of deep spiritual value.
The event was born from a group of families at the initiative and with the collaboration of the young parish priest, Father Fabrizio, and over the years it has grown to become one of the most anticipated events in the Capo di Leuca area. Each edition chooses a theme that guides the composition of the panels, ranging from the great symbols of the Christian faith to messages of stewardship for creation. The event is now promoted by the Associazione Tappeti di Segatura together with the Parrocchia San Michele Arcangelo.
The highlight is the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, which, after the solemn Holy Mass in Piazza San Michele, winds through the town's streets and concludes right on Via San Giacomo, where the priest imparts the Eucharistic blessing while walking on the carpet. The evening continues with musical performances and, at the close, a pyromusical show. The carpet remains visible until midday on Monday, allowing residents and visitors to admire it before it is removed.
Visiting Castrignano del Capo during Corpus Domini means discovering one of the most genuine expressions of popular devotion in Salento, in a village just a few kilometers from Santa Maria di Leuca and the extreme tip of Italy. An experience that combines art, spirituality, and community, where the most beautiful work lasts for only one night.
For the 2026 event, now in its seventh edition, the sawdust carpet of Castrignano del Capo was inspired by the Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi, marking the eighth centenary of the Saint's passing. The figurative path, composed of eleven panels laid along Via San Giacomo, intertwined ephemeral art, faith, and contemplation of creation.
The setup work began on the evening of Saturday, June 6, and continued throughout the night; on Sunday, the carpet was blessed and welcomed the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, during a three-day event that enlivened the center of the deep Salento region.
The sawdust carpet is created along Via San Giacomo, in Castrignano del Capo (LE), in the deep Salento region. The Holy Mass and the start of the procession are in Piazza San Michele.
The event takes place on the occasion of the feast of Corpus Domini (late June). The setup of the carpet begins on Saturday afternoon and continues throughout the night; the procession is held on Sunday.
The event is free and takes place outdoors along the streets of the town center.
Castrignano del Capo can be reached by car via the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca; the nearest airport is Brindisi, while the reference railway stations are in lower Salento (Gagliano-Leuca on the Ferrovie del Sud Est lines).
