The summer patronal feast of Morciano di Leuca, in the heart of the Capo di Leuca

The San Giovanni Elemosiniere Festival is the patronal celebration of Morciano di Leuca, a small town in the Province of Lecce located at the southern tip of Puglia. The town's majestic Mother Church, the religious and symbolic heart of the local community, is dedicated to the saint. In addition to the winter commemoration on January 23rd, the community renews its devotion every summer during the last ten days of July with a second festival: a heartfelt event that draws back many locals living abroad and thousands of tourists vacationing between Torre Vado, Torre Pali, and the coastal areas of the Capo di Leuca.
Morciano's bond with San Giovanni Elemosiniere dates back to 1576, when the saint's relic arrived in town from Venice, where his remains still rest today. The dedication of the Mother Church, built upon a pre-existing medieval structure, also dates back to that year. San Giovanni Elemosiniere, born in Cyprus and Patriarch of Alexandria in the 7th century, is remembered for his extraordinary charity toward the poor; in Salento, he is venerated as a patron saint in only two towns: Morciano di Leuca and Casarano.
The highlight of the festival is the solemn procession, during which the saint's silver bust and reliquary are carried through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by devotees, civil and religious authorities, and the sounds of the brass band. Solemn masses mark the days, with the community gathering around the Mother Church in an atmosphere of intense popular devotion.
The secular side of the festival is among the most evocative in lower Salento. The entire avenue, from Via del Mare to the Mother Church, passing through Piazza San Giovanni, is adorned with monumental domed illuminations that light up as the saint passes, creating a true spectacle of light and sound. In the morning, the brass band entertains the town, while traditional band concerts featuring famous opera arias are held at the bandstand. The greasy pole (cuccagna), an ancient game involving a greased pole with prizes at the top, is also a staple of the summer version and is highly popular with the community.
Along the festively decorated streets, market stalls offer traditional Salento products and sweets, while the evenings come alive with performances and events. The festivities inevitably conclude with fireworks, which illuminate the night sky of the Capo di Leuca in a spectacular finale.
The summer festival of San Giovanni Elemosiniere is organized by the Religious Festival Committee of Morciano di Leuca, which coordinates the entire calendar alongside the parish priest and broadcasts the most significant moments live. Falling in the heart of the tourist season, it represents one of the best opportunities to experience authentic Salento tradition just a stone's throw from Santa Maria di Leuca, where Puglia meets the sea.
The summer patronal festival of San Giovanni Elemosiniere will return in 2026 to Morciano di Leuca, in the heart of the Capo di Leuca tourist season. As of the writing of this entry, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published by the Religious Festival Committee. In keeping with tradition, the event is expected to take place in the last ten days of July and will feature the solemn procession with the saint's silver bust, monumental domed illuminations, brass band concerts at the bandstand, the traditional greasy pole contest, and fireworks to conclude the festivities. For the final calendar, it is recommended to consult the channels of the Festival Committee, the Municipality of Morciano di Leuca, and the tourist information offices of the Capo di Leuca.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center of Morciano di Leuca (LE), around the Mother Church of San Giovanni Elemosiniere, in Piazza San Giovanni, and along Via del Mare.
By car: from Lecce, take the SS 275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca and exit at Morciano di Leuca. By train: Lecce station on the Ferrovie del Sud Est network, then bus towards Capo di Leuca. Nearest airport: Brindisi (approx. 100 km).
The summer festival is held every year during the last ten days of July (traditionally around July 22-23). It is recommended to check the updated program with the Municipality, the Pro Loco, or the tourist information offices in Morciano and Torre Vado.
