The Corpus Domini floral carpet in the historic center of Parabita, in lower Salento
In Parabita, a town in lower Salento in the Province of Lecce, the solemnity of Corpus Domini is one of the most cherished events of the year. On the occasion of the feast, the town's historic center is covered in petals: this is how the Corpus Domini Flower Festival is born, a long floral carpet that covers the streets and is crossed in the evening by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament. Started around 2016 on the initiative of the parish community, the event has established itself in just a few years as one of the defining traditions of Parabita.
Behind the work lies a long preparation process that lasts for weeks. Volunteers collect large quantities of flowers of every color and store them in cool boxes, sorted by shade. In 2019, approximately 120,000 carnations were collected and stored in about a hundred crates. The designs are first drafted on paper, then transferred to the ground: outlines are marked with soil and the empty spaces are filled with flowers of the chosen color, also using colored salt for shading. It is a work of ephemeral art, destined to last only a few hours, in which adults, teenagers, and children participate, united by faith and a sense of belonging.
One of the most original features of the Parabita flower festival is its focus on recycling: in addition to flowers, many of which are unsold at the market or left in greenhouses by local floriculturists, coffee grounds, rice, flour, and expired cereals are used. In this way, the event combines religious devotion with a message of sustainability and the fight against waste, transforming waste materials into the colors and textures of the floral carpet.
The highlight arrives in the evening, after the solemn mass celebrated in the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista. The procession of the Blessed Sacrament crosses the streets of the historic center and passes directly over the flower carpet: as it is stepped on, the petals release their fragrance, transforming the liturgical gesture into a sensory and spiritual experience deeply rooted in Salento's popular devotion. The organization involves, alongside the parish, the "Madonna della Coltura" Solidarity Center and numerous local associations.
Located a few kilometers from the Ionian coast, in lower Salento, Parabita preserves this festival, which is part of the great tradition of Corpus Domini flower festivals spread throughout Italy. The town ideally shares this devotion with nearby Felline, a hamlet of Alliste, also famous for its own flower festival. For the visitor, the Parabita Flower Festival is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Puglia, far from the most crowded tourist circuits, where popular art, solidarity, and spirituality intertwine in a free event open to all.
In 2026, the Corpus Domini Flower Festival of Parabita was held on Sunday, June 7, the date of the solemnity. In the preceding weeks, volunteers collected and sorted thousands of flowers by color, storing them in cool crates, before creating the floral displays along the streets of the historic center.
The petal carpet, enriched with colored salt and recycled materials, was completed during the day. In the evening, after the solemn mass celebrated in the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Corpus Domini procession crossed the flower festival, releasing its fragrance and renewing a rite that unites popular faith and ephemeral art in the heart of Salento.
Created by the volunteers of the San Giovanni Battista Parish and the "Madonna della Coltura" Solidarity Center, using carnations, petals, colored salt, and recycled materials.
The flower festival is held every year on the occasion of the solemnity of Corpus Domini, between the end of May and June (in Italy, the feast is celebrated on Sunday). The floral displays are composed throughout the day, and the evening procession of the Blessed Sacrament crosses the flower carpet.
