The culinary showdown between the six historic districts of Tuglie
The Rioni Gastronomic Palio (also known as the Rioni Food and Wine Palio) is one of the most anticipated summer events in Tuglie, a small town in the Province of Lecce, nestled in the heart of Salento and Apulia. Every year, in the setting of Piazza Garibaldi, the town's six historic districts face off in a culinary competition that is part contest, part spectacle, and a grand community celebration.
The contenders for the Palio are the six traditional districts of Tuglie: Aragona, Piazza, Longa, Mazzuchi, Montegrappa, and Termiti. Each district fields its own team, driven primarily by the expert hands of local women who design and prepare the entire menu without any outside help. Popular participation is absolute: flags, colors, and district cheering squads turn the square into a true open-air theater.
The heart of the challenge is a rule as simple as it is tricky: each district must present a full menu—from appetizer to dessert—built around a single secret ingredient, common to all courses and mandated by the jury. This constraint sparks creative recipes that reinterpret Salento cuisine, evaluated by a jury that crowns the winning district of the edition.
The Palio was established in 2017 by the "Amici della Biblioteca" cultural association, in collaboration with the Unione Servizi Volontari and local associations. Beyond the gastronomic competition, the event is designed to rediscover the town's historical and cultural origins and strengthen ties between the districts, celebrating the identity and heritage of Tuglie. Today, the event is part of the "Sotto il Cielo di Tuglie" summer festival, a rich calendar of events that brings the Salento town to life from July to October.
The evening combines tastings, live music, and street performances in a joyful atmosphere that engages both residents and visitors. The Rioni Palio has become a symbol of the Tuglie summer: an opportunity to savor traditional cuisine, soak in the atmosphere of Salento's villages, and experience an authentic evening away from the most crowded tourist routes.
The 2026 Rioni Gastronomic Palio of Tuglie will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, in Piazza Garibaldi, marking its eighth edition. The event, curated by the "Amici della Biblioteca" association, is part of the "Sotto il Cielo di Tuglie" summer program, which in 2026 offers dozens of events from July to October.
As every year, the six districts - Aragona, Piazza, Longa, Mazzuchi, Montegrappa, and Termiti - will compete with a full menu, from appetizer to dessert, centered on a single secret ingredient imposed by the jury. The detailed program of the evening (times, jury, performances) will be announced by the organizers in the days leading up to the event.
