Nocturnal gourmet snowshoeing on the Cimbrian Plateaus
The Ciaspomagna Cimbra is one of the most distinctive winter events on the Alpe Cimbra, the vast plateau stretching between Folgaria, Lavarone, and Luserna in the heart of the Trentino Dolomites. Promoted by the Municipality of Luserna and the Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board, the event features a nocturnal snowshoe trek of approximately 8.5 kilometres, starting from Malga Millegrobbe and crossing the snow-dusted woods and clearings of the Millegrobbe and Vezzena plateaus.
The name combines two words that capture the soul of the event: ciaspole (snowshoes) for walking on snow and magnà, the local dialect word for eating. Along the route, illuminated by moonlight, participants stop at mountain huts and alpine dairies to enjoy typical Cimbrian and Trentino dishes. It is a slow-paced journey designed to savour the mountain silence and the authentic flavours of the plateau.
The itinerary is marked by several gourmet stops curated by local alpine dairies:
The event holds significant identity value as it takes place in the land of the Cimbrians: Luserna (Lusérn in Cimbrian) is the last community in Trentino to keep the Cimbrian language alive, an ancient Germanic dialect. Thus, the Ciaspomagna becomes an opportunity to connect with this unique linguistic and cultural heritage, set within the pristine natural landscape of the Alpe Cimbra in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The event requires mandatory booking and has limited spots for each date. Snowshoes are not included in the price and can be rented on-site. Warm clothing, waterproof hiking boots, and trekking poles are recommended.
The 2026 Ciaspomagna Cimbra was held over two evenings, January 17 and 24, with a meeting point at 5:00 PM at Malga Millegrobbe on the Alpe Cimbra. The nocturnal snowshoe trek of approximately 8.5 kilometres crossed the snow-covered woods of the Millegrobbe and Vezzena plateaus.
The route was marked by the usual gourmet stops: a welcome aperitif with Trento DOC, polenta, and Vezzena fondue at Malga Millegrobbe, barley soup with smoked bacon at Malga Millegrobbe di Sopra, goulash with polenta and sauerkraut at Baita del Neff with live music, and a Cimbrian pine and apple dessert with hot apple tea upon return. Booking was mandatory with limited spots for each date.
Malga Millegrobbe can be reached by car by driving up towards the Lavarone-Luserna plateau on the Alpe Cimbra. The nearest train stations are Trento and Rovereto, which are connected to the plateau by bus services.
Adult ticket 35 euros, children up to 10 years 22.50 euros (snowshoes not included). Mandatory online booking at www.alpecimbra.it or by contacting the Alpe Cimbra Tourist Board at +39 0464 724130 ([email protected]).
