About Teatino Carnival

The Chieti Carnival, known as the traditional Teatino Carnival, is the historic masquerade festival of the Abruzzo capital. In the historic center of Chieti, a colorful parade of masks, bands, and performers travels from Piazza Garibaldi along Corso Marrucino to the Villa Comunale, where the popular ritual of the "trial of King Carnival" takes place. The event is organized by the Camminando Insieme association with the patronage of the Municipality of Chieti and involves the city's five districts, schools, and local associations.

The traditional Teatino Carnival

The Chieti Carnival, known as the traditional Teatino Carnival, is the grand masquerade festival of the Municipality of Chieti, the capital of the province of the same name in Abruzzo. Every year, during the Carnival season, the city's historic center comes alive with a popular parade that blends tradition, folklore, and community participation, creating one of the most cherished identity-defining events for the people of Chieti.

The festival is organized by the Camminando Insieme association with the patronage of the Municipality of Chieti and actively involves the five historic districts of the city, schools of all levels, and numerous local associations, all working together to create the parade and its masks.

The parade and the trial of King Carnival

The heart of the event is the parade of masks and districts, which traditionally sets off from Piazza Garibaldi and winds through the historic center along Via Arniense and Corso Marrucino, passing through Piazza Valignani, Piazza Trento e Trieste, and Viale IV Novembre. The parade is accompanied by around a hundred musicians, bands, choirs, stilt walkers, clowns, and costumed groups, with the figure of Pulcinella acting as the symbolic guide.

The procession concludes at the Villa Comunale, where the ancient rite of the trial of King Carnival is celebrated: a popular pantomime that symbolically marks the transition between the old and new agricultural year and signals the end of the Carnival. It is a evocative, collective moment rooted in rural culture and Abruzzese traditions.

A community celebration

The Teatino Carnival is more than just a show: it is a weeks-long journey of participation. In school and association workshops, citizens—especially the youth—create Pulcinella hats and decorations painted in the characteristic colors of each district, eventually converging in the grand finale that represents the city united in its diverse spirits. Stalls offering typical Teatino cuisine are also present, strengthening the bond between the festival and the local area.

Chieti and Abruzzo

As a provincial capital and one of Italy's oldest cities, Chieti preserves a rich historical and archaeological heritage. The Corso Marrucino, the beating heart of city life, and the Villa Comunale provide the backdrop for the Carnival, transforming the center of the Teatino capital into a large open-air stage and bringing a tradition that represents the city's popular identity in Abruzzo back to the streets.
