Devotion and popular celebration in the Borgo delle Casette of Moscufo

The Madonna della Pietà Festival is one of the most cherished events in the Borgo delle Casette, a district of the Municipality of Moscufo, in the province of Pescara, nestled in the rolling hills of Abruzzo, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. Centered around Marian devotion, the community gathers every September for two days that weave together faith, music, and conviviality in Piazza della Pietà.
This is a festival with ancient roots, described by the organizers themselves as a celebration "that seemed lost forever": interrupted during the health emergency, it was brought back to life thanks to the determination of the local residents, who embraced it with great participation. Its return represents much more than a simple event; it is the rediscovery of an identity and a moment of gathering for the entire community.
The heart of the event remains its religious dimension, with liturgical celebrations in honor of the Madonna della Pietà led by the parish priest, Father Mauro Evangelista. Surrounding the devotional aspect is a rich secular program that enlivens the village evenings: Abruzzese dialect theater, brass band performances, and live music transform Piazza della Pietà into an open-air stage.
The festival takes place in a town steeped in history. Moscufo is famous above all for the Abbey of Santa Maria del Lago, a Romanesque church that houses one of the masterpieces of medieval Abruzzese art: the ambo created in 1159 by the master Nicodemo, decorated with stucco biblical stories, allegorical figures, and symbols of the Tetramorph. Around this heritage, traditional festivals like the Madonna della Pietà keep the most authentic soul of the territory alive.
Sponsored by the Municipality of Moscufo and supported by local sponsors, the Madonna della Pietà Festival is an opportunity to rediscover the warmth of Abruzzo's villages, where religious tradition and local festivities continue to walk hand in hand. Those visiting the Borgo delle Casette during these days will find genuine hospitality, free open-air shows, and the intimate atmosphere of a community gathering around its faith and roots.
The 2026 Madonna della Pietà Festival in Moscufo is set to renew, as it does every year in mid-September, the appointment with Marian devotion and popular festivities in the Borgo delle Casette. At the moment, the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released. Following the previous celebrations, liturgical services in honor of the Madonna della Pietà and a secular program featuring theater, brass bands, and live music in Piazza della Pietà, in the Municipality of Moscufo, province of Pescara, are anticipated.
Moscufo is located in the province of Pescara, in the Abruzzo hinterland. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Pescara Nord or Chieti-Pescara exits) and via the provincial roads connecting the Adriatic coast to the inland villages. The Borgo delle Casette district is just a few kilometers from the center of Moscufo.
The festival traditionally takes place in mid-September, with both religious and secular programs held in Piazza della Pietà. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
All shows and celebrations are free and held outdoors.
