The premier food and wine celebration of wild boar in the villages of the Pisan Hills
The Chianni Wild Boar Festival began in October 1976, when enthusiasts from local cultural and sports associations decided to celebrate the area's ancient rural cuisine, particularly the wild boar that has always roamed the woods of the Pisan Hills. Since then, the festival has grown into the most anticipated event of the year for the Municipality of Chianni, a small village in the Valdera area of the province of Pisa, nestled among the vineyards of the Pisan Hills Wine Route.
The undisputed star is the wild boar, prepared according to recipes passed down by local families. The festival menu features the famous penne with wild boar ragù, chiannerina soup, roasted wild boar, wild boar sausages, and liver, all paired with wines from the surrounding hills. The ingredients are largely sourced from local hunts: it is the village hunters themselves who supply the kitchens, creating an authentic link between the forest and the plate that makes this festival stand out from any ordinary village fair.
Beyond the food stalls, the historic center of Chianni comes alive for four days each weekend with an artisanal market, stalls selling local products, live music, DJ sets, saxophonists, and roaming bands. On weekend afternoons, folkloric processions by hunting groups parade through the streets, while the local Pro Loco association offers street food and charity initiatives. The festival has always been a meeting point for the entire community, featuring exhibitions and events dedicated to the village's history.
The Wild Boar Festival takes place every year on the second and third weekends of November, from Thursday to Sunday, in the historic center of Chianni (PI), in Tuscany. Access to lunch and dinner shifts at the festival venues is largely by reservation to ensure everyone has a seat at the table during the heart of the cold season, when wild boar is at its best.
The 49th Chianni Wild Boar Festival returns in November 2026 with its traditional dates: the first weekend from November 5 to 8 and the second from November 12 to 15, always from Thursday to Sunday. The dishes that made the festival famous are confirmed — penne with wild boar ragù, chiannerina soup, roasted wild boar, sausages, and liver — along with the usual array of artisanal markets, music, and entertainment through the streets of Chianni. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including shift times and the performance schedule, will be published by the Wild Boar Festival Association on the official website in the weeks leading up to the event.
