Peasant traditions come to life in the village of Montefoscoli, Palaia
The Peasant Civilization Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Montefoscoli, a picturesque hamlet in the municipality of Palaia, in the heart of the Pisan Hills in the province of Pisa (Tuscany). For two evenings, the medieval village comes alive, returning to the ways of the past: its streets and squares transform into a vibrant journey of flavors, music, and memories, spanning from the castle to the historic farm.
The event is organized by the Museum of Peasant Civilization, an institution founded in 1996 and housed within the Vaccà -Berlinghieri palace, where over 1,500 tools and numerous reconstructed settings of rural life are preserved. The festival is the moment when this heritage steps out of the museum halls to become a living experience, shared by the entire community.
The heart of the festival is the dinner along the village streets: as the sun sets, tables and refreshment points are set up in the alleys, where you can enjoy traditional Tuscan dishes, prepared with care and a focus on the quality of local products. It is an opportunity to rediscover the authentic flavors of peasant cuisine in a convivial, small-town atmosphere.
The evenings are accompanied by live music in the church square and dancing at the Giardino Miravalle. There is plenty of space for the little ones: from late afternoon, throughout the village and the garden, there are games, workshops, readings, and entertainment for children, making the festival suitable for the whole family.
Visiting Montefoscoli during the festival is also a chance to discover an authentic corner of the Pisan Hills: the village, the castle, and the nearby museum offer a precious glimpse into the Tuscan peasant civilization, defined by hard work, traditions, and a deep bond with the land. An unmissable event for those seeking a summer filled with taste, folk culture, and a genuine atmosphere.
The 2026 edition of the Peasant Civilization Festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5, 2026, in Montefoscoli, from 6:30 PM to 11:30 PM. Once again this year, the village will offer open-air dining in the alleys, live music, dancing, and entertainment for the little ones.
The detailed program of the festival, including artists and schedules for each evening, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event on the Museum of Peasant Civilization's channels. For updates, it is recommended to contact the organization.
The festival takes place in the village of Montefoscoli, a hamlet of Palaia (PI), between the castle and the farm, along the village streets and at the Giardino Miravalle.
Montefoscoli can be reached by car via the SS439 and the local roads of the Pisan Hills; the village is approximately 40 km from Pisa and Florence. It is recommended to park in the designated areas at the entrance to the village.
Admission to the festival is free. For information: Museum of Peasant Civilization of Montefoscoli, tel. +39 320 0291217, e-mail [email protected].
