The Nativity story told through the alleys of a Caserta village
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Piana di Monte Verna Living Nativity is a Nativity re-enactment that brings the historic center of this small town in the province of Caserta, in the Campania hinterland, to life every December. This is not a show staged on a platform: here, the entire village becomes the set, with its narrow alleys, stone doorways, courtyards, and small squares opened up for the occasion. The audience doesn't just sit; they walk along an open-air route, encountering traditional Nativity scenes performed by the local residents one after another.
The event is young, but it has a story worth telling. The idea was launched by a group of citizens the previous year and, with patience and determination, became a reality in December 2024, when the first edition took place. The organization was led by the Comitato Mamme PDMV, supported by local associations, the parish, volunteers, civil protection, and the municipal police. "It's magic: an idea becoming reality," the organizers commented at the end of that first trial, with the stated hope that the event would become an annual tradition. And so it did: the living nativity returned in December 2025, joining the official calendar of living nativities in Campania and the province of Caserta.
Those who visited the first editions describe a village completely transformed. The route begins with the natural light of sunset, accompanied by music, and continues as candles replace the sun, illuminating the alleys and giving the village an atmosphere suspended in time. The ingredients of the event remain the same:
Piana di Monte Verna is a small town in the Caserta hinterland, far from mass tourism circuits, which is precisely why it offers an authentic Christmas. The religious life of the town revolves around the Spirito Santo parish, with the church of Santa Maria a Marciano and the Suffragio church marking the holiday celebrations. During the living nativity, the historic center is cleared of cars and filled with visitors from neighboring towns, drawn by word-of-mouth and videos circulating on social media and local press each year.
Dates change from year to year and are announced by the organizers close to the holidays, usually between late November and early December. The first edition took place in December 2024, while the 2025 edition was included in the regional lists of living nativities for 2025/2026. No official calendar has been published yet for the 2026 edition: it is advisable to keep an eye on the Municipality and local association channels in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The Piana di Monte Verna Living Nativity does not have the scale or fame of the great Campanian living nativities, but it possesses a rare quality: it is still a festival made by the village for the village, open to those who wish to experience it with respect and curiosity. For those spending the holidays in the province of Caserta, it is a stop that pairs well with a day among the Caserta villages, perhaps completed by a gastronomic stop in one of the local trattorias.
The Piana di Monte Verna Living Nativity was born in December 2024 and was repeated in December 2025, entering the lists of living nativities in Campania. However, for December 2026, no official announcement has been published yet: neither the dates, nor the times, nor the route through the historic center alleys have been made known.
As with previous editions, the event is expected to take place between the Immaculate Conception and the Christmas holidays, opening in the late afternoon and continuing after sunset by candlelight. Definitive information is usually communicated by the organizers and the Municipality of Piana di Monte Verna in the weeks preceding Christmas, along with details on parking and traffic.
We recommend verifying the confirmation of the edition before setting off: this page will be updated as soon as official dates and programs are available.
Piana di Monte Verna is located in the hinterland northeast of Caserta and is easily reached by car. There is no direct train connection to the village: those arriving by train can get off at Caserta and continue by road. During the living nativity days, the historic center is pedestrianized, so you must park in areas outside the village and continue on foot.
There is no entrance fee: as with most village living nativities, access to the route is free. Any gastronomic tastings along the way may require a small contribution.
