The cheese-chasing race in San Valentino di Brentonico
The Cheese Rolling – Italian Championship is one of the most spectacular and folkloric events in Trentino: a race where dozens of daredevils throw themselves down a steep grassy slope in pursuit of a 5kg wheel of cheese. The event takes place in San Valentino di Brentonico, a village in the municipality of Brentonico, on the Brentonico Plateau at the foot of Monte Baldo, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige).
The event is inspired by the famous Welsh tradition of Cooper's Hill, where people chase a cheese wheel down a steep hill every year. Brentonico is the only Italian stage officially recognized by the Welsh governing body, the cradle of this unique discipline. The event is organized by the La Colonnina Association, in collaboration with local entities.
The descent takes place on the slope nicknamed the "Muro" (The Wall), a black ski run in winter with a gradient reaching 30 degrees. At the top of the ramp, competitors sit in a line and wait for the Master of Ceremonies to roll the cheese wheel down the slope: at the shout of "Go!", everyone throws themselves into the chase. Participants are divided into heats of 15-20 people to select the finalists, who then compete for the title of Cheese-Roller of the year.
Every year, the Cheese Rolling attracts thousands of people and many families, with female participation constantly on the rise. It is an event that combines fun sports, popular tradition, and the promotion of the Brentonico Plateau, set in a suggestive natural landscape among the meadows of Monte Baldo. An irresistible mix of adrenaline, spectacular falls, and community spirit that has made this event one of a kind in Italy.
