The Christmas market held within the baroque palaces of Ala, the City of Velvet
During the Advent season, the historic center of Ala, located in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), becomes the setting for one of the most evocative and original Christmas markets in Trentino. Here, the festive spirit isn't found in the usual outdoor wooden huts, but inside the halls and grand entrances of baroque palaces that tell the story of the so-called "City of Velvet," once famous for its production of fine silk fabrics.
The market trail winds through the historic buildings of the center, which open their usually private spaces to the public for the occasion. Participating venues include Palazzo Taddei, Palazzo Pizzini, Palazzo Gresti Filippi, Palazzo Malfatti Scherer, and other historic buildings. As visitors stroll from one palace to another, they discover the creations of over forty exhibitors: Christmas decorations and accessories, local specialties, and true masterpieces of artistic craftsmanship.
The event is much more than a simple market. Piazza San Giovanni hosts the farmers' market featuring the flavors of the Vallagarina valley, while the baroque halls play host to concerts, theatrical shows, and street performances. There is no shortage of food and wine tastings, including mountain cheese, mulled wine, cider, and charcuterie boards, alongside activities designed for children: creative workshops, readings, games, and entertainment inside the palaces.
Situated at the southern entrance of the Vallagarina valley, just a few kilometers from Rovereto, Ala preserves a baroque architectural heritage of great value, a legacy of the wealth once brought by the velvet and silk trade. The Christmas market is the ideal opportunity to rediscover this refined historic center—often far from mass tourism circuits—in a festive and welcoming guise. The event, organized by the Municipality of Ala, is confirmed year after year as a beloved appointment for families and visitors from all over Trentino.
The market takes place on the weekends leading up to Christmas, generally open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with food and wine stands remaining active until the evening. Admission is free. The event is part of the rich calendar of Christmas markets in Trentino, alongside those in Trento, Rovereto, and Arco.
The Municipality of Ala has confirmed the dates for the 2026 edition of the Christmas in the Baroque Palaces market: from November 28 to December 20, 2026, open on Advent weekends and the December 8 long weekend. The indicated hours are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with food and wine stands active until approximately 8:30 PM.
As per tradition, the historic center of Ala and its baroque palaces will host the artisan market, the farmers' market in Piazza San Giovanni, concerts, shows, and family entertainment. The full program and the theme for the 2026 edition have not yet been released: they will be published on the official channels of the Municipality of Ala in the weeks leading up to the event. Admission remains free.
Ala is located in the Vallagarina valley, along the A22 Brenner motorway (Ala-Avio exit) and on the Brenner railway line, with a station in the town center. The historic center and the baroque palaces are within walking distance of the station.
Open during Advent weekends, generally from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM (food and wine stands until approximately 8:30 PM). Free admission to all market areas.
Car parking areas are available in the center; bus parking in Via Bolzano and Piazza Giovanni XXIII, and camper areas in Via Tommasoni.
