The historical re-enactment of the 1632 community statute in Cavareno
In the heart of summer, the municipality of Cavareno, in the Upper Val di Non, dedicates an entire week to commemorating its community heritage with the Charta della Regola Festival. The event takes its name from the Carta di Regola, a document drafted back in 1632 that established the statutes and regulations by which the village community governed itself: the management of forests and pastures, rules of coexistence, and the rights and duties of heads of households. This ancient act is the centerpiece of one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
For the occasion, the streets and squares of the historic center fill with figures in period costumes: nobles and commoners, farmers and artisans bring a true 17th-century village to life. The most anticipated moment is the historical pageant, followed by the enactment of the ancient municipal ordinances in Piazza G. Prati, where the Charta della Regola is read and performed. Scenes of rural life come alive in the oldest farmhouses, while demonstrations of ancient crafts take place along the streets.
One of the most intense moments is the Prozessiòn del voto, which commemorates the vow made by the community of Cavareno at the end of the 1855 cholera epidemic. The procession, starting from the church of S. Maria Maddalena, unites the religious and civil dimensions, recalling the deep bond between the community and its faith.
The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the flavors of Nonesa cuisine, with tastings of ancient recipes prepared by local associations and the opening of the Osteria dei Zóni managed by the Youth Group. The side program is also rich: Le Botteghe Ritrovate, which brings disused premises back to life with courses, workshops, and crafts; a local produce market; opera and folk performances; cultural meetings; children's activities; and guided tours of the village's churches and historic buildings.
Promoted by the Charta della Regola di Cavareno ETS association with the support of the municipality, the event is free to attend and represents the highlight of the summer season. For those visiting the Province of Trento and the Val di Non, the Charta della Regola is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the popular traditions, history, and identity of an alpine community that continues to proudly preserve its memory.
The 35th edition of the Charta della Regola Festival is held in Cavareno from July 26 to August 2, 2026, with side initiatives continuing until August 16.
Scheduled events include: the inauguration of the exhibition (Sunday, July 26), the cultural meeting "La Scuola in Trentino" with Quinto Antonelli (Wednesday, July 29), Nonesa cuisine tastings at Parco de Zinis and the opening of the Osteria dei Zóni (Thursday, July 30), the evocative Prozessiòn del voto at the church of S. Maria Maddalena (Friday, July 31), the local produce market, and the opera performance "All'Opera sotto le stelle" (Saturday, August 1). The highlight is Sunday, August 2, with the historical pageant, Holy Mass with Gregorian chants, the demonstration of ancient crafts, children's activities "Vivi la Regola," and the re-enactment "La Charta della Regola" in Piazza G. Prati.
From July 20 to August 16, the 3rd edition of Le Botteghe Ritrovate is open, featuring courses, workshops, and crafts in the historic center's disused premises. Free entry.
