The great Immaculate Conception bonfire that lights up Christmas in Cansano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Peligna Valley, the small town of Cansano (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) celebrates one of its most cherished traditions every December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception: the Sant'Mari' Cuncett', the great Immaculate Conception bonfire. It is an event that symbolically marks the start of the Christmas period and brings the entire community together in Piazza XX Settembre, in front of the War Memorial created by sculptor Giovanni Granata.
The celebration is rooted in a mythical-ritual universe connected to the winter solstice, representing the death and rebirth of light during the darkest time of the year. Fire, an element of transition between earth and sky, honors the Immaculate Conception and accompanies the wait for Christmas. In the past, as the village elders recall, a bonfire was lit for every district, in a sort of friendly competition between neighborhoods; for some decades now, a single large pyre has been lit in the main square, gathering the whole community around it.
The most moving moment is the lighting of the bonfire, which traditionally takes place to the choral voices of the village women: the folk songs sung around the fire form the soul of the festival and make it a deeply evocative collective ritual. The warmth of the pyre and the flames rising into the winter night transform the square into a place of sharing, memory, and hope for the year to come.
The social aspect is entrusted to food stalls managed by local producers, restaurateurs, and associations, offering the authentic flavors of the Abruzzo mountains: traditional dishes, local products, and specialties to be enjoyed outdoors while waiting for the lighting. The festival is organized by the Municipality of Cansano with the collaboration of local associations, businesses, and numerous volunteers.
The Sant'Mari' Cuncett' is part of the rich tradition of Abruzzo fire festivals linked to the Immaculate Conception and Christmas, which includes famous celebrations such as the Farchie of Fara Filiorum Petri, the 'Ndocciata of Agnone, and the Glorie of Scanno. In Cansano, the bonfire retains its most intimate and village-like dimension, deeply rooted in the identity of the Peligna Valley community.
At the moment, the Municipality of Cansano has not yet released the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Sant'Mari' Cuncett'. As this is a traditional festival linked to the Immaculate Conception, the event is traditionally held around December 8th in Piazza XX Settembre, featuring the lighting of the great bonfire, food stalls, and folk songs. Official details (times, stalls, and initiatives) will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
