The handmade pasta festival in the heart of the Matrice district of Monterosso Almo
The Cavatieddi Festival is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Monterosso Almo, a small mountain town in the province of Ragusa nestled in the Iblean Mountains of Sicily. Every spring, the event draws hundreds of visitors to Piazza Sant'Antonio, in the charming Matrice district, to celebrate a dish that embodies the authentic identity of the village: the cavatieddi muntirussani.
Cavatieddi are small fresh pasta dumplings, strictly handmade by the women of the Matrice district, guardians of ancient knowledge passed down through generations. Served with a rich pork ragù, they are enjoyed hot alongside a glass of local red wine. In addition to the main dish, the festival stalls offer other traditional Monterosso specialties:
The festival is more than just a culinary event: it takes place on the eve of the Feast of the Angels and is part of the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata, the patron saint of Monterosso Almo. The square comes alive with folk music and dancing, creating a festive atmosphere that brings generations and families together, blending religious devotion with rural tradition.
The event is traditionally held in the weeks following Easter, when the Iblean village is dressed for the occasion. Entry to the square is free, while tastings and purchases at the stalls are paid. The Cavatieddi Festival is a precious opportunity to discover Monterosso Almo, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, and to experience the hospitality and genuine flavors of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Cavatieddi Festival in Monterosso Almo, the thirty-seventh, was held on Sunday, April 19, 2026, starting at 7:00 PM in Piazza Sant'Antonio, in the Matrice district. The evening attracted hundreds of visitors, drawn by the aromas and flavors of the cavatieddi muntirussani with pork ragù, prepared by hand according to the traditional recipe.
Alongside the main dish, there were freshly fried crispelle, ricotta cannoli, and Sicilian pastries. Musical entertainment was provided by the Trio Musica e Magia di Damiano Scollo, which accompanied the festival with folk music and dancing. The festival took place on the eve of the Feast of the Angels, as part of the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata, the town's patron saint.
