About Mazzarrone Grape Festival

Every September, the town of Mazzarrone, located in the agricultural heart of the province of Catania, celebrates its signature product with the International PGI Table Grape Festival. Featuring tastings of premium grape varieties, an exhibition of Sicilian excellence, live cooking shows, folk parades, and major free concerts in Piazza della Concordia, the event draws thousands of visitors annually. The highlight is the presentation of the prestigious 'Grappolo d'Oro' (Golden Grape) award, honoring those who champion local viticulture.

The festival dedicated to Mazzarrone PGI grapes

The Mazzarrone PGI Table Grape International Festival is the premier food and wine event in the small town of Mazzarrone, located in the province of Catania, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Every September, the village transforms into a vibrant fair celebrating the product that has made its name famous throughout Italy and abroad: the Mazzarrone table grape, one of the few Italian grapes to hold the PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status.

A land dedicated to viticulture

Cultivated on hillside terraces bordering the provinces of Catania, Ragusa, and Caltanissetta, Mazzarrone grapes are prized for their sweetness, crunchiness, and quality. The festival was created to showcase this excellence and the entire local agricultural supply chain during the peak of the harvest season. The event blends product promotion, popular entertainment, and community identity.

What to expect during the event

For three days, the center of Mazzarrone comes alive with a rich calendar of activities:

  • Tastings and sales of PGI grapes and local specialties, such as mustata and cuddureddi
  • Exhibition fair dedicated to Sicilian food and craft excellence, featuring stands for agricultural and technological equipment
  • Show cooking areas with chefs and well-known culinary figures along the town streets
  • Folk parades, processions of musicians and flag-wavers, and performances for children and families
  • The presentation of the Grappolo d'Oro Award, granted to companies and individuals who have promoted the territory and its grapes
  • Major free evening concerts in Piazza della Concordia, the beating heart of the festival, featuring nationally renowned artists

A celebration for the entire community

The Grape Festival is organized by the Municipality of Mazzarrone in collaboration with local associations and the Pro Loco, and over the years it has become a defining event not only for the town's residents but for the entire Calatino area and south-eastern Sicily. Admission to events and concerts is free, fostering a convivial atmosphere that blends flavors, music, and rural traditions.
