Devotion to Saint Lucy in the Baroque heart of Modica Alta, featuring processions, cucciteddi, and Sicilian cannoli

On December 13th, the liturgical day of Saint Lucy, the city of Modica celebrates the Syracusan martyr with a day entirely dedicated to popular devotion. The festivities take place in the heart of Modica Alta, around the majestic Mother Church of San Giorgio, a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the faithful from across the province of Ragusa gather.
The day begins early in the morning with the evocative Mass of Light, which recalls the very meaning of the name Lucy, linked to light. Throughout December 13th, numerous Eucharistic celebrations take place from the early morning until evening to accompany the city's intense devotion. The ancient small church dedicated to the saint, located in the characteristic and historic Costa district in Modica Alta, has unfortunately been inaccessible for several years, which is why the services are concentrated in the Duomo of San Giorgio.
At the heart of the festival's gastronomic tradition are the cucciteddi, small treats prepared according to ancient custom by the expert hands of elderly women: just flour and water, dough rolled out with a rolling pin and cut into small pieces baked for a few minutes, then blessed and distributed to the faithful throughout the day. Alongside this devotional custom, the Cannolo Festival takes place, an opportunity to taste one of the absolute symbols of Sicilian pastry, with fresh ricotta and a crispy shell, in a perfect union of faith and local flavors.
The highlight of the day is the solemn procession that, in the late afternoon, accompanies the statue of Saint Lucy through the streets of the historic center, amidst the emotional participation of the faithful. The parade is marked by the notes of the renowned "Belluardo-Risadelli" band of Modica. The festivities conclude in the evening with a fireworks display that illuminates the sky of the Baroque city.
Included in the UNESCO World Heritage list along with the late-Baroque cities of the Val di Noto, Modica offers the Saint Lucy festival a unique backdrop made of staircases, monumental churches, and alleys that climb the hillside. The celebration represents a defining appointment for the Modican community, where religious tradition, the art of confectionery, and the sense of belonging to the province of Ragusa merge into a single festive experience.
The Saint Lucy Festival in Modica returns, according to the usual recurrence, on December 13th, 2026. As every year, the day will be structured around Eucharistic celebrations in the Mother Church of San Giorgio, the distribution of blessed cucciteddi, the Cannolo Festival, and the solemn late-afternoon procession accompanied by the Belluardo-Risadelli band. The official program with precise times has not yet been released: it is recommended to check for updates at the San Giorgio parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festival is celebrated every year on December 13th, the day of Saint Lucy.
