The centuries-old autumn fair of Palagonia, featuring local flavors, traditions, and entertainment

The Belverde Fair, also known as the October Fair and in the Sicilian dialect as "A fera di Biedduviddi", is one of the most deeply rooted events in the calendar of Palagonia, a town in the Metropolitan City of Catania, in the Sicily Region. Its origins date back to the early 1800s, when it began as a livestock fair so famous that it was known far beyond the island's borders. Its name derives from the original site of the event, near the church of Madonna di Belverde, on the western outskirts of the town.
Over the decades, the fair has evolved from a trade-focused livestock event into a true showcase for local food, crafts, and productive activities. Palagonia is, in fact, one of the Sicilian capitals of the blood orange, the iconic citrus fruit of the Piana di Catania, and the fair has always been a window into the flavors and trades of the Calatino area. The event is traditionally held on the second weekend of October, attracting traders and visitors from all over Sicily.
Today, the Belverde Fair is a three-day event promoted by the Municipality of Palagonia together with the Pro Loco Palagonia, with the support of the Sicily Region and the Metropolitan City of Catania. The historic center transforms into a path of artisanal stalls, tastings of local products, and open-air stages. The main events are concentrated between Piazza Rosario Livatino, Piazza Garibaldi, and the Council Chamber.
The Belverde Fair represents a moment of economic revitalization for the area and a way to preserve local traditions, where the Palagonia community reconnects with its roots. Amidst the stalls, music, and scents of the Calatino autumn, the fair offers residents and visitors an authentic experience of inland Sicily. The dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is recommended to follow the channels of the Municipality and Pro Loco Palagonia for updates.
The 2026 Belverde Fair in Palagonia is currently being planned.
