The Vizzini Living Nativity: a blend of Nativity, Sicilian flavors, and the characters of Giovanni Verga

The Food and Wine Living Nativity in the Lands of Verga is one of the most evocative Christmas events in the province of Catania. It takes place in Vizzini, an Iblean village in Sicily famous for being the birthplace of the Verist writer Giovanni Verga and the real-life setting of Cavalleria Rusticana. Through the alleys of the San Michele district and Borgo Cunziria, actors and extras in period costumes bring late 19th-century Sicily back to life, blending the tradition of the living nativity with a literary tribute to Verga's masterpieces.
The event is structured into two narrative itineraries that complement each other. The first is the sacred representation of the Nativity, set in the suggestive frame of the Church of San Michele, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. The second is the Vizzini nativity, which celebrates the island's crafts and traditions: you will encounter the barber, the shoemaker, the baker with freshly baked bread, women kneading flour, embroidering, or hanging laundry, and 'u cufinaru weaving wicker baskets. The journey concludes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men on horseback.
In the heart of Borgo Cunziria, the original setting of Cavalleria Rusticana, the episodes and characters dear to Verga take shape: beyond the famous novella, you will meet figures drawn from Jeli the Shepherd, The Lover of Gramigna, History of a Blackcap, Nedda, The She-Wolf, and Mazzarรฒ. These living tableaux frame the grotto of the Baby Jesus, in a rare interweaving of Christmas devotion and literary memory.
The food and wine component is the other soul of the event. Along the route, participants offer typical Sicilian products and local wine tastings, allowing visitors to discover the authentic flavors of the Iblean peasant tradition. It is an experience that engages all the senses, where historical re-enactment also becomes a story of food and the conviviality of the past.
Set in the historic center of the Municipality of Vizzini, the nativity is designed as an inclusive and accessible route, with measures in place to ensure it can be enjoyed by people with motor disabilities. An event that, edition after edition, confirms Vizzini as one of the must-visit Christmas destinations in the entire Sicilian Region.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Food and Wine Living Nativity in the Lands of Verga have not yet been published. Based on previous editions, the event takes place during the Christmas period between late December and Epiphany, along the alleys of the historic center of Vizzini. The official program, including the calendar of openings and hours, will be released by the organizers closer to the holidays.
