The equestrian parade and animal blessing in the Gargano region
In the town of Mattinata, in the province of Foggia, devotion to Saint Anthony the Abbot manifests annually in one of the most characteristic events of the Gargano: the knights' parade with the blessing of the animals. Organized by the Mattinata a Cavallo association, the festival bridges the gap between religious observance and equestrian tradition, bringing an ancient bond between the community and its horses back to the streets.
The heart of the day is the horse parade that winds through the town center, featuring riders of all ages dressed for the occasion. The most anticipated moment is the blessing of the animals, held on the parvis of the Abbey Church of Santa Maria della Luce: a solemn rite that attracts residents and numerous visitors from surrounding areas every year. Breeders and enthusiasts from across the Gargano, as well as other parts of Puglia and neighboring regions, participate in the event.
Saint Anthony the Abbot, revered as the founder of Christian monasticism, is traditionally considered the patron saint of domestic animals and the farming world. For this reason, his feast day, celebrated in many towns on January 17th, has always been linked to the blessing of livestock and the life of the masserie (traditional farmhouses). In Mattinata, this devotion intertwines with the memory of the turnidde de Sant'Antunije, the horse races that farmers once held at the first light of dawn, when village life still revolved around sheep tracks and farmsteads.
More than just a folkloric re-enactment, the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot is a moment of collective identity for Mattinata, capable of combining religious devotion with sporting passion. The event concludes with the procession returning through the town streets, followed by a convivial gathering filled with music and dance. Included in the official calendar of the Municipality of Mattinata, it is one of the best opportunities to discover the most authentic roots of the Gargano promontory.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot took place in Mattinata on Sunday, March 1st. The day followed the traditional format of the event, with the gathering of riders and the horse parade through the town streets, leading to the blessing of the animals on the parvis of the Abbey Church of Santa Maria della Luce. The event, organized by the Mattinata a Cavallo association, confirmed its status as a fixed appointment for the Gargano territory, drawing breeders and enthusiasts from neighboring towns.
The program follows the traditional structure of the festival; detailed times are communicated by the organizing association in the days leading up to the event.
The event takes place in late winter, coinciding with the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot. Please check local sources for the updated date each year.
