Zapponeta transforms into ancient Bethlehem through faith, tradition, and community

During the Christmas season, the streets of Zapponeta, a small coastal town in the province of Foggia, Apulia, turn into a large open-air stage. The Zapponeta Living Nativity recreates ancient Bethlehem along Via Michele Zezza, where the town's houses, courtyards, and alleys become the natural backdrop for the Nativity. It is not just a simple performance, but a path to be walked, step by step, immersed in the daily life of the time.
The heart of the event lies in its over one hundred participants: local children, teenagers, and adults who dedicate weeks to building the sets, sourcing costumes, and studying their roles. Walking along the path, you will encounter shoemakers, shepherds, bakers, and fishermen busy at their trades, witness lessons in the synagogue, pass by Herod's court with the changing of the guard, and stop at the inn to sample local products. The attention to historical detail—from the structures and furnishings to the tools, utensils, fabrics, and clothing—provides an authentic glimpse into traditions and ancient crafts.
The Living Nativity is organized by the Municipality of Zapponeta, the San Michele Arcangelo Parish, and the Events Committee, involving almost the entire citizenry. Established in 2022, it has grown year after year to become one of the most cherished Christmas events in the area, attracting visitors from across the Capitanata region and beyond. Mayor Vincenzo Riontino has often highlighted how the initiative showcases a strong sense of community and a cultural and spiritual value that goes beyond a simple representation.
Amidst the lights, lit fires, real animals, and the scents of the tastings, the Zapponeta Living Nativity creates a magical and evocative atmosphere. It is a moment when the town gathers around the values of faith, culture, solidarity, and family, in one of the few locations in the province of Foggia overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia. For those visiting northern Apulia during the holiday season, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic popular tradition deeply rooted in the territory.
The Zapponeta Living Nativity, which has become deeply rooted in the community in recent years, is expected to return in December 2026 along Via Michele Zezza. At the moment, the official date and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published. The event is organized by the Municipality of Zapponeta, the San Michele Arcangelo Parish, and the Events Committee. As soon as they become available, details regarding times, the route, and the living scenes will be updated here.
The Living Nativity route winds along Via Michele Zezza, in the center of Zapponeta (FG), Apulia.
Zapponeta can be reached by car from the SS159 state road (delle Saline), south of Manfredonia; the nearest train station is in Foggia, from where you can continue by bus or car. By car, take the Foggia exit (A14 motorway) and then follow signs for Manfredonia–Zapponeta.
Admission to the Living Nativity is free. The event takes place in the late afternoon and evening: warm clothing and comfortable shoes are recommended for the walking route.
The event is usually held in December, close to Christmas. It is recommended to check the updated dates on the official channels of the Municipality of Zapponeta and the San Michele Arcangelo Parish.
