About Barletta Challenge

Every September, Barletta in the BAT province steps back in time to relive the famous 'Disfida' of February 13, 1503, when thirteen Italian knights led by Ettore Fieramosca defeated as many French knights commanded by Guy de La Motte. Costumed processions, men-at-arms, flag-wavers, Renaissance dances, encampments, equestrian shows, and pyromusical displays bring the historic center and the Swabian Castle to life. Starting in 2026, the event becomes a permanent fixture during the third week of September.

The Barletta Challenge: A page of history brought to life

The Barletta Challenge Historical Re-enactment is the most important historical event in this Apulian city, located in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani (BAT) province. Every year, the historic center and the monumental Swabian Castle transform into a grand open-air stage, allowing locals and visitors to relive the epic knightly clash of February 13, 1503.

On that date, during the Italian Wars between France and Spain, thirteen Italian knights led by Ettore Fieramosca faced and defeated thirteen French knights commanded by Guy de La Motte, restoring the honor of Italian arms that had been questioned by the French. The episode, made famous in the 19th century by Massimo D'Azeglio's novel Ettore Fieramosca o la disfida di Barletta, has become a symbol of the city's identity, which has dedicated a monument to D'Azeglio along Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

A historical pageant of men-at-arms and flag-wavers

The highlight of the re-enactment is the grand Triumphal Procession that winds through the city streets. Hundreds of figures in period costumes parade through squares and alleys: men-at-arms, flag-wavers, fire-eaters, musicians with trumpets and drums, nobles, ladies, halberdiers, Spanish soldiers, French prisoners, and mounted knights. The procession departs from the Castle and follows the main thoroughfares to the D'Azeglio monument and the Teatro Curci, before returning to the fortress.

Numerous events revolve around the main parade, marking the days of the festival:

  • The Offense (L'Offesa): the re-enactment of the episode that sparked the challenge, set in the historic Cantina della Sfida.
  • The Challenge Proclamation (Bando di Sfida): announced by heralds through the streets of the historic center.
  • Renaissance Encampments: set up in the Castle Gardens, featuring dances and court life.
  • Equestrian Shows: including the horseback descent of Ettore Fieramosca along Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
  • Pyromusical Show: the grand finale of the festival.

A permanent fixture from 2026

By municipal resolution, the City of Barletta has established that starting in 2026, the Challenge Re-enactment will be held permanently during the third week of September. Choosing a fixed date aims to de-seasonalize the event, extend the tourist season, and allow operators to build packages and itineraries around the festival, thereby enhancing one of Puglia's strongest identity-defining events.

Barletta, city of the Challenge

Overlooking the Adriatic, Barletta preserves, in addition to the Castle, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colossus of Heraclius, and the Cantina della Sfida, a symbolic site linked to the history of 1503. The re-enactment is organized by the Municipality of Barletta in collaboration with Puglia Culture and with the support of the Puglia Region, representing an opportunity to discover the historical and cultural heritage of the city and the entire BAT province.

Barletta Challenge — edition 2026

The 2026 edition marks a turning point for the Barletta Challenge: by municipal resolution, the re-enactment becomes a permanent fixture during the third week of September. As every year, the historic center and the Swabian Castle will host the grand Triumphal Procession, Renaissance encampments, heralds with the Challenge Proclamation, and the equestrian and pyromusical shows that evoke the knightly duel of 1503.

The 2026 Barletta Challenge Historical Re-enactment is the first edition with a fixed date: the Municipality of Barletta has established that the event will be held every year during the third week of September, to de-seasonalize the event and strengthen its tourism appeal.

The established structure of the re-enactment includes the opening with The Offense (L'Offesa) at the Cantina della Sfida, the Challenge Proclamation announced by heralds, Renaissance encampments in the Castle Gardens with dances and court life, and the grand Triumphal Procession that crosses the historic center with men-at-arms, flag-wavers, musicians, nobles, and mounted knights, reaching the monument to Massimo D'Azeglio and the Teatro Curci. To close, the pyromusical show.
