About Notte di Luce

Every winter, the «Notte di Luce» living nativity comes to life in the evocative Valle di Santa Margherita, just steps from the Basilica Santuario di Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Andria. Amidst natural tuff caves, dozens of costumed actors bring the Nativity scenes to life: the Annunciation, Joseph's dream, the census, King Herod's court, and the birth of Jesus. Organized by the Augustinian Fathers and the Madonna dei Miracoli Association, this moving journey through Apulian Christmas tradition draws thousands of visitors each year.

The «Notte di Luce» Living Nativity in Andria

Every year, between late December and Epiphany, the Valle di Santa Margherita in Andria transforms into a vast, open-air nativity scene. The «Notte di Luce» event has become a staple of the Christmas calendar in the city and the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, and is part of the Puglia Living Nativity Network. The route winds alongside the Basilica Santuario di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, one of the most cherished places of worship for the people of Andria.

A Unique Natural Setting

What makes this nativity special is its context: the Valle di Santa Margherita is a rock-hewn site characterized by cavities and caves carved into the tuff, linked to the history of Basilian monks. In this evocative natural setting, illuminated by torches and soft light, the sacred scenes take on a powerful, immersive quality rarely found in indoor nativity displays.

The Nativity Scenes

The path leads visitors through a series of living tableaux animated by costumed performers:

  • The Angel's Annunciation to Mary;
  • Joseph's dream;
  • The census ordered by Caesar Augustus;
  • King Herod's court;
  • The Nativity, the heart and conclusion of the journey.

Each scene is accompanied by carefully curated text and settings, designed to convey the most authentic essence of the Gospel narrative.

Organizers

The living nativity is promoted by the Augustinian Fathers of the Basilica Santuario di Santa Maria dei Miracoli in collaboration with the Madonna dei Miracoli Association. The artistic direction is entrusted to Maria Rosaria Adduasio and the ASD Latin American Style of Andria, who coordinate the numerous actors and volunteers involved in the production.

An Event for the Whole Family

«Notte di Luce» is designed for audiences of all ages: families, children, parish groups, and tourists passing through the town of Andria will find an opportunity here to experience the Christmas atmosphere in a participatory and non-commercial way. Access to the route is managed in small groups to preserve the contemplative nature and quality of the experience.
