About Castione Chestnut Festival

Every autumn, the small village of Castione, on the Brentonico Plateau in the province of Trento, celebrates its most precious product: the Castione chestnut. For an entire weekend, the village courtyards fill with the scent of roasted chestnuts, traditional Trentino dishes, chestnut beer, and liqueur. Between tastings, live cooking shows, wood carving demonstrations, and hikes to the ancient chestnut groves of Monte Baldo, the Chestnut Festival is an unmissable event to discover a centuries-old farming tradition.

The chestnut festival on the Brentonico Plateau

The Castione Chestnut Festival is the autumn fair that brings the small village of Castione to life every October, located in the municipality of Brentonico, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Organized by the Circolo di Castione in collaboration with the Associazione Tutela Marroni di Castione, the event celebrates the signature product of this corner of Monte Baldo: the chestnut, a prized variety cultivated for centuries on these sunny slopes, renowned for its unmistakable flavor and high quality.

An entire village in celebration

For two days, the courtyards and squares of the village transform into a journey of taste and tradition. Visitors can savor freshly roasted caldarroste (roasted chestnuts) and traditional Trentino cuisine, from canederli (bread dumplings) to mountain-style main courses and homemade desserts. There is no shortage of chestnut-based specialties, such as chestnut beer and Marroncino di Castione liqueur, which, alongside local wines, are the stars of the "Chestnuts and Wine: The Perfect Pairing" competition.

Tastings, crafts, and nature

The program blends flavors with rural culture. Highlights include a live cooking show by chef Cristian Bertol, dedicated to recipes featuring Castione chestnuts, and live wood carving, where artisans work right before the public's eyes. Wandering musicians bring the village streets to life, while children can enjoy games, recreational activities, and entertainment.

  • Traditional Trentino dishes: canederli, main courses, and desserts
  • Chestnut beer and Marroncino di Castione liqueur

Discovering the ancient chestnut groves

One of the most evocative aspects of the festival is the guided hike to the plateau's historic chestnut groves, where you can uncover the secrets of chestnut cultivation and admire ancient trees that tell the agricultural history of the community. Castione is also accessible on foot via the fourth stage of the Cammino di San Rocco.

A Trentino tradition

With its roots firmly planted in the rural economy of Monte Baldo, the Castione Chestnut Festival is one of the most beloved autumn food and wine events in the Vallagarina valley and on the Brentonico Plateau. It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy an excellent local product, support local producers, and experience the genuine atmosphere of a mountain village in Trentino.
