Celebrating the chestnut in Castione di Brentonico

The Castanetum Flower Festival comes to Castione di Brentonico, a village in the municipality of Brentonico overlooking the Vallagarina valley in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). This event celebrates the ancient Calvarine chestnut grove, one of the region's most authentic natural treasures, offering a day outdoors dedicated to chestnut blossoms, local traditions, and mountain culture.

The Calvarine chestnut grove

The heart of the festival is the ancient chestnut grove sprawling across the slopes above Castione. These trees, some of which are centuries old, tell an ancient story of chestnut cultivation that has nourished and supported the communities of Vallagarina for generations. The event aims to reignite local interest in the chestnut—considered one of the area's most authentic gems—by fostering a dialogue between the agri-food supply chain, timber production, and experiential mountain tourism.

A day of nature, taste, and art

The program blends forest exploration with conviviality. The morning begins with a guided tour of the chestnut grove, reached via a walk starting from the center of Castione, featuring historical and naturalistic insights. In the afternoon, the grove comes alive with:

• stalls and tastings of local products made from chestnuts and marroni;
• live wood carving demonstrations;
• performances by artists and caricaturists;
• activities and games designed for children.

The day concludes with a concert by the Coro SOSAT among the trees, featuring the traditional alpine choral repertoire.

The National Chestnut Road

The Castione stop is part of the Castanetum Flower Festival, a national touring exhibition that, in the summer of 2026, involves dozens of Italian municipalities along the Strada Nazionale del Castagno (National Chestnut Road). The initiative is promoted by the National Association of Chestnut Cities, with the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry, to promote chestnut groves in bloom and support the economy and biodiversity of mountain areas.

Organization

In Castione, the day is organized by the Association for the Protection of Castione Marroni, with the involvement of the Municipality of Brentonico and the Vallagarina territory. An event that weaves together nature, gastronomy, art, and music in one of the most evocative settings in Trentino.
