Piedmont's most irreverent Carnival: a flour-filled showdown between the four districts of Bruino
The Carnevalcarretto and the Flour Battle are the heart of the Carnival in Bruino, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont. The tradition began in 1980 when a group of friends, inspired by the famous Battle of the Oranges in Ivrea, decided to invent their own Bruino-style version of the most irreverent festival of the year. Since then, the event has grown into a defining local tradition, bringing together entire generations with decorated floats, competing districts, and thousands of participants.
The competitive spirit of the festival lies in the challenge between the four historic districts of Bruino: Grifoni, Greppia, Leoni, and Orsi. Each district participates with its own colors, floats, and masked groups, enlivening the parade before facing off in the square. It is a playful competition that strengthens community spirit and ignites good-natured rivalry between the town's neighborhoods.
The day begins with the Carnevalcarretto, the most colorful parade of the year: allegorical floats, masks, music, and joy travel through the town center, starting from Piazzale Actis Goretta. The procession then reaches Piazza della Pace, the true epicenter of the festivities, where the Boisterous Flour Battle takes place. For the occasion, approximately 7,000 flour bombs are prepared, ready to turn the square into a white cloud of fun. A milder version, using mini flour bombs, is dedicated to children.
Organized by the Municipality of Bruino together with the Pro Loco and the Battaglia della Farina Association, the event is free and open to all. It is advisable to wear old clothes or a jumpsuit, as the flour spares no one: anyone entering Piazza della Pace will inevitably leave covered in white. An authentic, popular, and contagious Carnival experience—come ready to get messy!
