Over 200 artists perform Carl Orff's masterpiece on the Alpe Cimbra
The Palaghiaccio di Folgaria, located in the municipality of Folgaria in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), transforms into a grand concert hall to host the performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. This extraordinary event brings over 200 performers—musicians and choristers alike—to the Alpe Cimbra, united to interpret one of the most beloved and recognizable compositions of 20th-century music.
Composed in 1936 based on medieval texts, Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata that alternates moments of great choral impact with more intimate, reflective passages, addressing universal themes such as destiny, nature, and fortune. The famous opening and closing movement, «O Fortuna», with its rhythmic and expressive intensity, is among the most well-known pieces of classical music in the world. Hearing it performed live by such a massive ensemble is an intense and overwhelming experience.
The star of the evening is the Orchestra Sinfonica delle Alpi, accompanied by five local choirs for a total of approximately 130 choristers. The performance is conducted by Maestro Maurizio Postai. The project, curated by the Euritmus association, brings together professionals and established amateur groups, featuring numerous young performers in a collaborative production that involves various musical entities from across Trentino-Alto Adige.
The Folgaria concert is part of a broader musical tour organized by Euritmus, which began following the massive success of the Carmina Burana performance at the Feste Vigiliane in Trento, in Piazza Fiera. The tour with the Orchestra Sinfonica delle Alpi visits various locations throughout Trentino-Alto Adige, bringing Orff's masterpiece to town squares and unconventional spaces.
The evening at the Palaghiaccio is free of charge and promoted by the Municipality of Folgaria with the support of Apt Alpe Cimbra. The event is part of a rich calendar of summer activities that enliven the Alpe Cimbra between Folgaria, Lavarone, and Luserna, blending culture, nature, and sport.
