The patronal feast of Caoria in the Vanoi Valley
The Caoria Festival is the patronal feast of the village of Caoria, in the municipality of Canal San Bovo, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Dedicated to Saint John Nepomucene, the community's patron saint, it takes place every May in the picturesque setting of the Vanoi Valley, one of the most authentic and hidden valleys in Trentino, nestled between the Dolomites and the Lagorai chain.
The event is carefully organized by the Caoria Alpini Group, the beating heart of the village's social life. The festival weaves together the religious dimension of the patronal feast with community and social gatherings: the traditional bell concert (campanò), the solemn Holy Mass, and the procession through the village streets mark the moments of devotion, while the food stalls and musical evenings bring the festival area to life.
One of the undisputed highlights is the food stall set up under the Alpini marquee, serving typical Alpine dishes accompanied by Bavarian beer and plenty of drinks. The kitchen remains open throughout the festival days, offering visitors traditional local dishes in an atmosphere of authentic mountain hospitality.
The evenings at the Caoria Festival are dedicated to dancing and live music, with bands and orchestras enlivening the marquee until late. The program also includes entertainment such as cabaret at the parish theater, live cover music, bouncy castles, and games for children. A curious local tradition is the guessing game for the weight of deer antlers recovered in the Caoria wildlife area, which testifies to the village's deep bond with nature and the surrounding mountains.
Attending the Caoria Festival is also a great chance to visit the village and its treasures: the Great War Museum, the taxidermy and nativity scene exhibitions, and the Vanoi ethnographic trail house. An event that tells the story of an Alpine community proud of its roots, amidst faith, tradition, and a love for the mountains.
Friday, May 15 — 9:00 PM: Cabaret evening at the Caoria Parish Theater.
Saturday, May 16 — 2:00 PM: Traditional bell concert; 6:00 PM: Opening of the food stalls; 9:00 PM: Musical evening enlivened by the Spritz Band with live music. For children, there were bouncy castles, games, and a mini funfair. The entire event took place under cover, regardless of weather conditions.
Sunday, May 17 — 10:00 AM: Holy Mass in honor of the Patron Saint followed by a procession; 12:00 PM: Lunch under the A.N.A. marquee; in the afternoon, live music, bouncy castles, and face painting; 4:00 PM: Award ceremony for the deer antler weight-guessing competition.
